I have a 97 civic ex d16y8 and my axle keeps popping out. I replaced the clamps and everything but it keeps coming out.

Does the axle shaft keep popping out of the transmission, or are you talking about the rubber boot coming off?

Yeah the axle shaft keeps popping out the transmission. Not sure if it makes a difference that the shaft is from a 1999 civic and my civic is a 1997 but I did notice that the shafts were shapped differently. I will be trying the 1997 shafts to see if it makes a difference. I had one shaft from the 1997 on the passenger side which gives me no problem but the driver side axle which was the 1999 is the one that keeps coming out.

raise the car up, secure with jackstands. Go underneath the car and see if you can move the driver's axle (left to right) with your hands. If it moves, replace the axle. You will see it move on the inner boot (near the tranny). More than likely, the knuckle is loose/damaged.

Make sure you're getting it in all the way. They have to be installed with some force. My method is to put the outer end in the knuckle and swing it out to slam the axle in before putting the ball joint back on. (Be careful not to over-extend the inner joint.) The inner joint should end up very close to the transmission and you should not be able to pull it out by hand.

If the ends are different the circle clip on the end of the axle may not be engaging fully or the axle isnt seated inside the transmission fully

I got it all figured out turns out I needed the shaft from the 97 civic rather then the 99 everything works fine now thank you everyone
