Default automatic tranny question

I have a '99 Civic Ex with an auto tranny. I know manuals are the way to go with performace in mind, but I don't have a manual. I have an auto. Anyway, what is the most effective way to use the auto tranny. By this I mean what gear should I start in, do i want to stay in drive the whole time, should I shift gears (1, 2, D3, D4)? Thanks.

unless you like murdering trannies, just leave it in "D" and stand on it.

there is no 1, it starts from 2 to 4. what's the purpose? if just dragging then just floor that shyt... if you're already going and stuff and want to drop into a lower gear to stay high in powerband, then just drop it down from 4to3 or to 2 if you're already in 3rd gear.

edit: i mean to say there is no 1 on your shift panel
