i have a weird problem with my 92 lx auto. recently when the engine/tranny are still cold, it wont shift into 3rd. it will shift from 1st to 2nd fine, but then it stays in 2nd till i come to a complete stop. sometimes if i floor it from a stop, it will make a loud "clunk" then it will shift into 3rd and 4th fine. otherwise is clears up after about 5 mins of driving. i'd like to sell this car soon so i need to fix this asap.

Take it slow around the neighborhood for 5 minutes before giving them a highway drive.

Flush the transmission fluid and replace it with as close to the exact right amount as possible, that would be a good starting point.

i changed the fluid today and it doesnt seem to have changed anything...do you guys think getting a flush would really change anything? since it makes that clunk sound..i was thinking maybe a mechanical problem

It can't hurt and it's much cheaper than replacing the transmission. Check the owners manual for recommendations on the fluid, maybe you're using the wrong kind?

it cant hurt the car...but it can hurt my wallet...

i just want to know if anyone has any idea of the real problem here. if noone does, and flushing the tranny is my cheapest option, then i'll do it. i dont want to waste my time and money on a 70 dollar tranny flush though if that isnt the problem.

just think if u waste 400$ on a used trans when maybe a flush coulda done it, you have to start small and hope i had a beretta that shifted like **** that was an auto got the thing flushed and changed, shifted fine and sold the puppy the next month

i GOT A Lx auto 2 and sometimes if punch it and let off in high RPM's it sticks and takes a while 2 down shift......Im gettin an EX trans later anyway so it's no big deal

The trans 4 R car is reasonably cheap so it might jus be easier 2 replace

If the tranny is going bad/or already bad. Leave the old fluid in it. Changing fluid can/probably will make it worse.

You probably don't want to hear this but I have a '94 Pontiac Bonneville too, and I used to it for my everyday car. I was expieriencing the same problem. It would shift into second, then third would come along and it'd hang there like a slipping clutch. I would gas it a few times and it would finally snap into gear. Well this went on for about 2 week when finally I was coming out of an intersection, gassed it to make the next light and when the tranny went to shift into third gear, I hear a BAM! and my speedo freaked out, Pulled over and saw a trail of tranny fluid behind me. the differential in the tranny blew apart and destroyed the whole transmission,..I need a new tranny.

i drive a 00 accord right now with 120k. after i watched fast and the furious, i decided to squeeze nitrous (75 shots, stock). i get the same problem but mine sticks in 1st. i changed my fluid and same problem. it's the transmission... i have yet to get mine swapped. by the way, swap a manual. for some reason, automatic rebuilds keep breaking apart ah.
