Any special tools to remove front discs on a 1998 Civic?
Hello, new member here.
I am new to Hondas and am planning on doing a front brake job on a friend's 1998 Civic EX. I understand that some older Hondas retained the discs with some type of pin or something that required a special tool so that you could remove the discs to get them surfaced. Does a 1998 Civic, or do the discs just slip on the wheel studs?
Also, do the two bolts that hold the calipers have any unusual head type or are they just metric hex or allen heads or something?
Bottom line: will I need any special tools to do this job?
Thanks

You need a 12mm 14mm 16mm phillips screw driver and a drill (just in case)
Take off the caliber (which is either one of those sockets, i cant remember which so i said the 3) 2 bolts and it comes right off, move it to the side then take the screw driver and take out the 2 screws holding the disc in. If they strip use the drill. Its pretty easy.

Caliper bolts should be 6-point, 14mm if I remember. The only tool you need to get the discs off is a hammer and a phillips head screwdriver (or an impact driver) because the two set screws that Honda decided to use can be a huge PITA after they've rusted in place.

When i did my rear disc brake conversation.. i couldn't get those screws off for the life of me.. a torch worked wonders though, 12 bucks from ace hardware.. best investment ever!

Thanks all, reason I ask is I haven't had a chance to look at it today (car is at friends house), and I wanted to just get there after work, do the job tonight w/ no surprises. I knew I saw some car with philips screws retaining the disc, but couldn't remember which.
This sure beats doing the job on some older rear-drive domestics; I HATE packing bearings.

I use a hand impact driver to .remove the screws, thats the one you hit with a hammer. if you dont have one try a pointed punch on the edge of the screw and tap with ahammer it should bust it loose
