I'm pretty sure Honda MTF isn't equilvalent to 10W30. Yes I use 10W30 in my trans, but I'm pretty sure they aren't the same.
As for the synthetic thing, no idea.

Dosnt the service manual say that you can use motor oil but for a short time?
The new Honda MTF has a mix of syncromesh in it. I say just still with the syncromesh stuff.

Only use 10-30 if your in a bind. If you could go to your local dealer (Honda or Acura) do so and get MTF. MTF protects a hell of alot better then 10-30 would, weither its syn or not.

Also, would it happen to be a LSD tranny? Honda told me to run 10-30w in it. "We use that on all our LSD trannys" Worst feeling ever. 2 days later I put in MTF and it was a billion times better.

Honda uses a very lightweight MTF (as far as MTFs go).
The Honda MTF has friction modifiers designed by the guys who designed YOUR CAR!
I once put just regular *** 10W-30 in my 91 hatch because I was poor and destitute years ago. It shifted like ****, especially when it got cold.

That doesn't make sense as far as a trans problem. If it shifts nice, then it has to engage the gear well. It's a solid metal shift linkage. If it were made of bits of string, I could see how it would shift well but not engage the gear.
You probably have a clutch issue.

Re: (B serious)
no I dont think my gear issue is from the oil.. I think its just a D series tranny that has been run hard.. It just likes to pop out of gear.. not too uncommon of a problem
