Default Another TDC Thread

I did the screwdriver in the empty Cyl. 1 spark plug hole trick, and when it came to the top of its peak on the compression stroke (TDC) the "UP" marks on the camgears were point at about 10 o'clock. Is this a problem? Does this mean my timing was originally off? How would I adjust the camgears so that they are in time without manually moving them with my hands. Thank you for the help

First align the timing marks on the crank pulley before you look at the marks on the cam gears. You could move the cam gear several degrees without noticing vertical movement on the piston when its near TDC.

And in order to align the marks on the crank pulley i have to remove the lower cover right?

Nevermind, I found the timing mark on the lower cover. So this is considered TDC?

However, when this mark is aligned on the crank pulley/lower cover, the cams are still at 10 o'clock.

Anybody know why my camgears would be off like this?

ya that's NOT right. undo the tensioner and set the cams to TDC yourself or you can undo the cam covers and set them that way might be a bit easier then turning them by hand. but I see the engines out of the car so i'd say just undo the tensioner and set them keep in mind the marks on the side.

Ok so I won't bend any valves or **** anything else up by undoing the tensioner and moving them by hand so that the cam gears are at 100% 12 o'clock?

you're fine to undo the tensioner no harm comes from that set them then spin the engine "by hand" in other words attach a 19mm socket to the crank pulley and turn the engine over 3-4 times and confirm that you are still at TDC.

Ok, but after I set them like you say, then i would put the belt back on and tighten the tensioner THEN spin the engine by hand, right? Because otherwise, if I was spinning the engine with the belt off...the piston would crash into the valves causing bending..

Alright, so I can move the camgears with the belt off without bending valves. Just making sure, because I don't want to **** up my engine.

Very true. I just thought I read somewhere not to turn them without the belt on.

The only way to adjust the cam timing would be with the belt off
