Another EK Hybrid is born........
I recently took on a project which was putting a JDM second gen B16A with 00 Si tranny into my friend's 96 CX hatch. This is the first time I've worked with an EK and it was much easier than I thought. I'm wanting to get one myself now for an H22 project
He ordered the motor from Honda Motors Online expecting to get a second gen B16A. What he really got was the semi-rare grey plug first gen B16A from an auto Integra XSi (still had the flexplate on it) The head is dated 11/91 . Well I thought there would be a few problems since there was no MAP sensor integrated into the throttle body. Remedy: I took an external one from my old 89 DX and used it with a vacuum line to the throttle body and it works perfect!
I used the stock DX harness and wired everything up on the block that would plug in. I'm using an OBDII distributor and injectors and I also made an OBDI jumper to run a Skunk2 chipped P72 ecu for now. I had to rewire the alternator, IAC, and IAT with the B16 plugs.
I ran wires for the knock sensor, VTEC solenoid, VTEC pressure switch into the cabin but I haven't wired them up yet. I'm getting codes for the VTEC solenoid and IAC but there's a little troubleshooting to do and I should have it all worked out. I'll post some pics of the car and swap once it's all done.

I built my own OBDII to OBDI jumper so I never relocated any pins. I know the DX has a 3 wire IAC and the plug on the B16 has a 2 pin. I would say that I wired it wrong when I put the B16 plug onto the DX wiring. I am going over the wiring later this afternoon, should be any easy fix.

I hope he isn't too bummed that he'll have to swap in the cams from a manual B16A in order to get correct power levels...
Thats a serious oversight on the part of hondamotorsonline. He must be a really good sport.

He has really bad luck with almost everything he buys so he just figured he would keep what he got. He's going to upgrade to the ITR/CTR cams in the spring so that will help. I'm just glad it's running good and not smoking

I tried to talk him into spraying the engine bay while the engine was out but he said ahh don't bother. I was thinking at least some black Rustoleum or something. The paint on the car is very clean (Lexus IS300 dark grey Metallic) but just open a door, hood, hatch, etc. and it's not obvious that the car was originally red...

I took it out for a few test runs yesterday and it's not bad. I'm not too impressed, not near the power of my B18B CRX or B18C VX but hey it's got VtEc yO! I haven't revved it very high and I know that's where the power begins in the B16.... way up there. After a week or 2 of normal driving I'll see what it feels like up around 8K

You should have forced your friend to paint that engine bay. I mean, if its out, there is no excuse not to. Anyways, thats cool you guys got the swap done. Any pictures of the new heart, or entire car?
