Alternator Removal Trouble -- 98 civic ex
Hey guys,
I'm having real trouble getting off the alternator on my 98 ex. I loosened the mounting nut and lock bolt, even went as far as loosening the bolt for the pivot that the lock bolt attaches to. I've sprayed WD-40 on the mounting pivots, knocking them to get it loose and the thing won't budge an inch. I know it's literally only held on by the bolt and nut but I don't want to damage anything. Anything work for anyone else? i.e. smacking it harder at the mounting pivots?
Thanks.

You need a long prybar, something heavy. If you're replacing the alternator sometimes you'll end up having it smash it to get it out so understand that you may not get your core charge. The steel through bolt seizes in the aluminum alternator housing, sometimes the only thing you can do is break the case around it. Even just hitting the bolt can transfer enough shock the case that it cracks anyway. In extreme cases I've even seen the lower cast iron bracket break.

Thanks for the advice Ron and 94, I was able to get the thru bolt out by giving it a little nudge with a hammer. The alternator loosened up a bit and I was able to get the belt off and now it's just screwing out the bolt. I'll check for cracks and breaks on the alternator and I'm replacing the bracket and thru bolt just in case.
