For all of you with speedometer problems
92-95 civics are plagued with speedometer problems. Mine has been jumping around for over a year and I finally decided to fix it. Instead of paying $200+ for a new speedo, I removed the guage cluster and removed the speedo from the cluster. I then removed the circuit board from the back of the speedo and took a long hard look at it. I found what I was looking for- broken solder joints. The connector that the speedo plugs into on the board had "vibrated" the solder joints apart and you could push on the connector to reveal the cracks. I resoldered them and now my speedo works great.
If your speedo jumps up and down or comes and goes, and you DON'T have a check engine light, this repair MAY save you some cash.

Woah... I'm going to pull my dash apart tomorrow and try this... and if it works.... then you will be my HERO!
Mine's been jumping around / coming and going for about 6 mos. now and it's been driving me crazy... I even replaced the VSS thinking that was the problem.

My junkyard EX dash cluster started having tachometer problems. Replacing the flexible circuit board wasn't that expensive, and worked very well.

Re: For all of you with speedometer problems (-CP-)
Check engine light usually means there is no signal reaching the ECU. (bad sensor or circuit problems)
You can switch the boards and retain your current mileage reading. I pondered buying a cluster from a junkyard and switching the boards, but with my luck I would end up with another damaged speedo.
It will be difficult to see the cracks in the solder, I would suggest resoldering all pins of the connector on the board (the block that the pins of the speedo slide into when the board and speedo are assembled- mine had a black connector). Be careful, too much heat will damage the board. This may not fix everyone's speedo, but it should help many of you. If you don't have a small pencil iron or can't solder well, have someone that is competent at soldering do this for you.
Shawn- were you able to locate a new board or just swap it with other used parts?
Keep in mind that this is intended for 92-95 civics and possibly 94-97 accords.

New circuit board from the dealer. It was worth it.

i dissassmbled my guage cluster and took the circuit board on back. couldn't find any solder joints damaged. The board connects to the speedo not by solder joins it looks like they have connects that contact the board. I have 1993 civic ex. I couldn't figure out what joints you talk about. I put mine together and works fine for now. But my problems have been intermittant.
I'm thinking its the VSS sensor but my money is low and this is not a critical problem.
Thanks for advice.
