Default For all you savvy on Cali smog laws...BARing my D15B

I'm in the market for a little shopping list full of car parts I may need to BAR my JDM D15B.

Among them are:

A USDM P28 ECU
2-wire O2 sensor
USDM intake manifold which can hook up with the evap system in my car

My situation and question goes as follows:
I still have my old D15B7 original engine with the intake manifold and everything. Would I be able to use the old D15B7 intake manifold, or will I need to strictly adhere to getting a D16Z6 (USDM Si) intake manifold?

PS - To anyone who has done this before, is there anything I'll need to add to my list so I can be prepared to BAR my car?

Serious answers please, I'd like to avoid those who would just say, "Why bother, just BAR a B16 "

-TIA

All probably except that the JDM D15B does not have a bung (term usage?) for the evap system used for smog control. I'm afraid it would fail if I just try and go test right away.

Also, I was reading up on the issue of the O2 sensor. On the JDM D15B, there is a ONE wire O2 sensor, which goes without the heater wire, whereas the USDM D16Z6 has multiple. This may be crucial because when they prepare to BAR me, they may run the car cold, and that could ruin emissions.

So, in order to be compatible with a two-wire O2 sensor, I'm going to need a USDM P28 ECU as well.

I'd really like to get on this problem, but I'm feeling so hesitant about not getting it right the first time. Thanks for the reply, any more would be very useful for me.

NO, they wont run your car cold, if they do, theyre idiots and you make sure to tell them because the BAR assoc even states to let it warm up. second, call bar themselves and they will tell you exactly what you need to legalize that engine. main concern though is that you use the z6 harness (if thats the equivalent to your current engine)

AND dont tell them you want to combine harnesses from another car.

your best bet is to call them directly, its completely free and you can bug them for as long as you want. do it.

Convert it to a Z6 motor. Meaning run a 4wire O2. I dont really know what you mean by evap bung? A bung is where you would screw something into (like o2 sensor, or EGT valve). Evap is just vac lines.

You shouldnt have to change the intake manifold, i always thought it was the same as the z6 manifold.

Why even say that? The guy wants a D15B and specifically said that he isn't looking for criticism of his engine choice. D's are good engines, regardless of what Import Tuner told you.

You need to follow the smog diagrams for your year vehicle or newer.

Since you didn't mention what car you had, I'll guess at 92+

Ok, so since you're installing a "VTEC" engine, you would need to follow the Z6 smog devices.

GL to you.

That's all I did with my SOHC ZC VTEC and I've passed smog about 5 times w/out BAR and the smog techs have never taken a second look.

USDM motors are high mileage and have usually been whipped on by the previous owner because the VTEC motors only come in the sport models. That defeats the whole purpose of swapping the motor. The only way I'd buy a USDM motor is if I could compression/leak down/drive test the motor with it still in the donor car and I could verify the mileage as being around 50k. Or if I was going to rebuild the motor anyway.

Ok, thanks for all the replies guys, I'll take all your suggestions into consideration.

It had 48,000 miles on it, and came with the OEM LSD.

To fill in some vagueness in information, it is a JDM D15B that is already installed in my 95 EH2, and running well. As for the evap bung terminology problem, I think I meant nipple, sorry.

Any more replies would be much appreciated, thank you.
