How difficult is it to replace and tension an AC belt on a 98 civic ex coupe? How much should i be looking at for the dealer to fix it?

it's really not that hard. if you don't have any power steering, it's even easier.
pick up a repair manual, it'll show you step by step.
and don't take it to the dealer, they will RAPE you.

Hey, I'm not trying to be an ******* or anything, but what was the last car you saw with AC but no PS (that wasn't aftermarket)?
Though I do agree with what u aid, the dealer will tear u a new ***, tell u u need new this this this this and tis, and it'll come out to a measily 3,567 dollars.
Replace it yourself, if you've ever done the timing belt this is just the same (actually a lot easier) .
Even if you don't feel you have the mental capacity or the tools to do it take it to a GARAGE before you take it to the dealer. ANY garage will know how to put it on.

i don't know if he's the first person to own it. i've seen once, where an ex had a/c but no P/S. friend of mine bought it that way, the motor was blown and replaced with another sohc, but the p/s was removed. he could have the same situation, IDK, just trying to help a member out.

its very easy to change...get your old belt..take it to your local autozone or whatever..have them match the size.and give them are your info...slap it back on and give it some good tension...should be fine...

Are you retarded? No it isn't. There are countless Civics out there that do have air conditioning and don't have power steering.

Re: AC belt? (Targa250R)
Lots of base model Civics with no PS had AC as an option, especially in hotter regions.
Don't be a jerk and just cut the belt...AC is the best at defoggin your windshield.
Remove the PS pump by loosening 2 12mm bolts on opposite sides of the pump, the belt will come off and then remove the bolts and swing the pump to the side. When reinstalling, you need a 1/2" dr ratchet to tension the PS pump.
One this is off, loosen the 14mm nut on the AC pulley, then loosen the 10mm tensioner bolt until the belt can come off. Then remove the 14 mm nut and the pulley assembly. Make sure you get the updated pulley from Honda, it's about 40 bucks. Don't use aftermarket crap...Napa, Autozone, etc, these just fail early.

Re: AC belt? (Evs-One)
If I recall correctly, doesn't the torque dampener arm run through the belt for the AC? I'm pretty sure that, in addition to loosening the PS pump and belt, you have to also unbolt the AC compressor to get to the 4 bolts for the torque dampener on the block. Then you have to unseat those and the 2 bolts on the chassis mount to slip the belt through there and back onto the crank pulley and the compressor pulley. Maybe I'm wrong..?

Re: AC belt? (EKcivicEX)
I don't see why you'd have to change the belt...only needs changing with the t-belt service.
But anyways, if you did change the belt, you just unbolt the 2 14mm bolts that hold the torque mount to the subframe. You will probably need to loosen the 3 17mm nuts for the upper mount. LOOSEN slightly, don't remove.

Re: AC belt? (Evs-One)
oh, I usually charge 1.5 hours to do the pulley...thats 150 in labor, 200 with parts
everyone thinks a dealership is a rip-off, but do you all think tools and diagnostice computers are free?

Right, you don't have to loosen the AC compressor. I forgot that torque mount on the bottom of the subframe slides right off the arm once you loosen the 2 bolts holding it on, given you loosen the upper mount to tilt the engine down a little bit. Good call

Well leave it to Honda then, what can I say.
Usually when a car has the "luxury" of AC it has the "luxury" of PS.
This is the first time I've seen AC without PS OEM, my bad .
EDIT:
NVM, I'm not getting bitch-out banned
