Default ABS Modulator wires degraded - is there a better one?

On my 96 EX, the original ABS unit has a problem. I have no lights yet, but the two wire pigtail going into the ABS motor is falling apart. The insulation is just flaking off. I think if I use the ABS it's just going to blow a fuse and not work - probably when I really want it to work In Honda's part system, the replacement # is the same from 1996-2000. (57110-S01-A11) A good used unit is fine for my purposes, but it looks like at some point the vendor for the ABS unit changed. I'm trying to get away from the possibility of shorted wires. My unit is marked "ATI," and has a plastic shroud around the ABS motor. It looks like there is a later unit marked "Mitsubishi" or Mitsuba," no shroud around the motor.

Has anyone run into this problem on the 96/97 EX's, and is the later unit less prone to the insulation flaking off?

Thanks for any help,

Chris
