Default ?? about Heli-Coil Inserts

Is there any disadvantage to installing Heli-coil inserts for spark plugs?

I recently had to install one into a stripped plug on a d15b7.

I am going to rebuild a d16z6 and was thinking it would be a good idea to simply install them into all spark plug sockets.

Any disadvantage to doing this?

This is just a simple piece of advice from a guy who has had to use heli coils for more than one occasion. I used to work on cars for a living, and now I am working in the field of bolt making. Heli coils are awesome IF and ONLY IF, you a: put them in properly and b: use them only when necessary. I would seriously reccomend against using them in the other spark plug holes, unless they are all stripped as well.

I am going to run nitrous with this system and thus will be pulling the plugs quite often.

Steel inserts sound like a good idea for someone who will be inspecting plugs once a week.

Any alternatives to heli-coils?

I've used them on my 350 for thermostat threads on an aluminum intake, and the guys at the shop I got it at said you could use them to "strengthen" threads. I would think so, but some might disagree. I don;t see why not!

My block mount bolts pulled out. I heli-coil them And have never had a problem. By the way we use them all over the airplanes I work on. So They are strong as ****.

i have used heli-coils on multipule occasions. and the rule of thumb is if u dont need it dont use it. if not properly installed they can cause some serious damage, especially in the cylinders. if u loose a piece in there u would b hurtin for sure.

The kit cost around $30. It's fairly easy to do once you have the head off. Just take your time and use lots of oil when installing the insert (coil).
