About going to a CA Ref
i got a ticket for 27150 (exhaust) & 27156 (mod emission) and so now im suppose to go to the ref. my question for those who have gone to the ref is: do they pop your hood?
i have a gsr in an ek and i was going to put a stock cat and exhaust on and get tested but if they pop the hood then there's no point. lemme know thanks

Re: About going to a CA Ref
They pop ur hood and see what motor you have so they can test the db of the exhaust. the rpm they hold your car at depends on the motor. I had a b16 in my hatch and I got and exhaust ticket. The ref said u have a b16 and we have to test the car with delsol specs. So they held the rpm at 5500 with a db instrument about a foot away from my tail pipe. They did not use the dyno to test db of the my exhaust. I did it twice and it was the same procedures. But since you got a smog device violation you will have to smog your car. Gl on that though.

What year is your car and motor? If the GSR is older than the car, then you are SOoL. When I went to the ref to get my car certified, obviously they popped my hood to make sure all of the emissions components were installed.

if u go to the ref then ur gonna need to pass everything n make ur motor legal and a Bar sticker..u can either pay the fine which is gonna be like $300+ or make ur motor legal meaning change everything to stock and hook up all ur evap stuff

For the modified exhaust they dont say anything about your engine they check your water and oil and then sound test it.. but since you got a modified emissions violations they will inspect the car and do a smog on it

Oh also if you decide not to go to the referee you just have to pay the fine and keep rolling. also if you pay the fine you will have to smog your car at a test only station for next year.

Re: About going to a CA Ref
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't an aftermarket exhaust a "mod emission?"
I know that the exhaust is for sound reduction and doesn't have an affect on emissions, but doesn't the vehicle code consider the exhaust part of the emission system, and thus, if modified, it's a modified emission system?

Short answer, "yes it can." Not exactly the same, (JDM TypeR into a USDM Teg) but it's an answer.
