About to buy car, need expert info on owner's swap!!
First of all, I searched.
I will be looking at a 99 Civic DX HATCHBACK this weekend with a B16.
I forgot if he said it was JDM or USDM.
Where are the engine and transmission codes located (physically)?
Also, where's the ECU?
Pictures would be GREAT!
If the engine is JDM, what ECU should he be running?
And will it have needed to be custom wire harnessed and chipped?
I am a little confused on the whole "OBD I, II, 0" types....
Any links to info would be greatly appreciated!!
I basically want this to have been a clean swap, with all components (engine, trans, ecu, harness) correctly functioning together. I don't want it to be a hack project, and I want it to be street legal (I live in CT). I don't think CT has SMOG testing, but if the swap is JDM, wouldn't I just need a cat? This is where the OBD issue confuses me.
Thank you!

First of all, you need to know the laws for CT. Some states say that a swap is smog legal only if the donor motor is out of a car that is the same year or newer than the patient vehicle. As far as having a cat, that will depend on CT also.
The engine code stamp will be on the pass. side of the motor just to the left (looking from the front of the car) of the exhaust mani. If it is JDM, it will say B16a. If it is USDM, it will say B16a2 or B16a3.
I'm not sure where the tranny code is.
The ECU is behind the passenger kick panel.
If the motor is a B16, it should be run by a p30.
If the car is wired correctly you shouldn't need to "custom harness or chip anything."
As far as the OBD thing, your car is OBD2b ('99-00). depending on where the motor was sourced from, it is either OBD-1 (Don't remember what year it started, but ended in '95), OBD-2a (I believe from the '94-97 Del Sol's with the B16a3's, someone correct me if I'm wrong), or OBD-2b ('99-00 Civic Si).
