99 si, speedometer not working, engine light on
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
The car still works, is it safe to drive till I get it fixed?
Thanks in advance.

Re: 99 si, speedometer not working, engine light on
first step would be to get the DTC, maybe it would be able to give you a hint where to find your problem........... JMO
btw, I guess its safe, its just not legal, but I did get out of a speedin ticket cuz mine wasnt workin in my Cadillac, I had it inspected that day and it had failed for the speedo I forget what else, well on the way home I got a ticket, and a week later I ended up findin out it was just a fuse and it passed inspection, so I made sure I took all the rite papers and told the judge that my speedo wasnt workin, he asked for proof and I ended up without any points, PBJ or even any fees..........

How much do you think the repair would take? The part?
Thanks.

Since your check engine light being on can mean more than one code (for a problem), you should get your codes read.
Autozone and most other parts stores (California might not do this) can scan your car for free.

Before buying a new VSS, try unplugging it and plugging it back in first. Mine was just a bit dirty last time, after cleaning it off and plugging it back it, speedo was back up and running

Also, Autozone doesn't scan your car for free anymore. They only sell the code reader from now on since a month ago.

Good News (depends how you take it lol). That's the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor). Try cleaning it like RyosukeFC3s suggested and see if the speedometer starts working again. If not, you have to get a new VSS and replace the old one. Then the speedometer should come back to life. If it doesn't, that means there's a wiring issue (short or a cut) in the VSS circuit and that will need to be fixed.
You can check the wiring before you replace the sensor if you'd like. It's cheaper that way but more work intensive. Whatever floats your boat.

Think my VSS must have taken a dump, too. Throwing code PO500 and speedo doesn't work.
Even with my Helms, I'm kinda scratching my head at finding exactly. I think I found it (deep in under the intake tube with a vertical connector coming out? Is it removable without taking out the entire transmission?

Re: 99 si, speedometer not working, engine light on
Am I missing the section in the Helms where this thing is removed? Found the troubleshooting section fine, but it doesn't list where to take it off. I thought it would be on the transmission section but don't see it there, either....
I was quoted $286 for the stealership to do it. $94 from Autozone but they need to know if it's Nippondenso or Matsushita variants apparently. So guess I gotta get under it and find out, huh?

They look similar, but how much would it suck to order the part, pay for it, wait out until it gets in, take out your old one and find out that the old one doesn't look like the new one and the new one doesn't fit?
Then you have to get a ride, find the receipt (since there's a warranty it will be saved in the computers too), return the part and order the correct one.
I understand if they have one part in stock and you're at the store. Buying one gives you a 50% chance that you're correct and you won't have to come back. When you order, you have to come back.

(Bottom of the plug is shaped differently.)

Just go remove it. It's two bolts and a plug. You can see where it is on the transmission housing on the other image I posted in my post before.

go to your local junkyard.. get a VSS.. save some money.
and you can use one from a D series.. it doesn't have to be from an si or other b series equipped car, see the link.

Honestly.. its super simple to do, its one 10mm bolt and that's it. just be careful while tightening the bolt down so you dont break it off in the trans.
