So today im driving and the car is running fine. Come to a stop and sit for 5 min or so and notice the temp gauge a little above normal. After looking it over i have surmised that the fan is kicking on a little late. As when the fan turns on it is above normal. What would cause this? Low coolant? bad temp sensor/switch? what exactly kicks the fan on at a certain temp? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

What i could before work. basically just looked it over. This just started happening today. I was thinking it could be a thermoswitch or maybe low on coolant. Car is running a spoon rad cap.

It could be any one, or combinations, of things in the system. Start checking one by one to start ruling them out.
At least check the coolant level and stop guessing.

Funny I just posted a similar thread a few days back, I run the car and sometimes at idle it will go up to 3/4 and then finally the fan will kick on.

I just tried to bleed the system, and will watch it now, I did have to add quite a bit of coolant after bleeding.

I was wondering about the thermo switch too? Does it just fail or work from time to time? I wonder if you can test the switch with a multi-meter for contunity?

I do know thermo switch has to be working somewhat because the fan will come on, but seemed late.

^^^^ thats almost my problem only not as hot. It seems like the the thermoswitch degrades over time maybe? Im gna do sum testing when i get home.

Well try this then, drive the car say half hour, park it and just idle and watch the temp gauge see how hot it gets, and how long the fan kicks on.

I do know people had the same problem, changed the switch and it still happened, so I am wondering that the fan will never turn on and then the switch failed? maybe?

Mine does not get above the water symbol. The fan kicks on at the same spot everytime so far. Thermoswitch or ect switch.....

Then the swtich is prob fine then, it is when you start climbing past 1/2 up then worry.

Well its past half maybe 5/8 to the top then the fan kicks on.

Have you changed the coolant, or any cooling related part recently, you said you have a spoon rad right how long ago was that installed?

Have not touched the coolant at all. The rad cap was with the car when i purchased it in December. Could be low coolant or maybe a faulty thermostat not allowing the coolant to reach the sensor.

You keep asking about low coolant. CHECK IT!!! Bleed the system in case there is air trapped.

Where is the Cooling fan switch located? as well as the Ect sensor?

I just dealt with all this myself literally last week. If the fan is kicking on then I don't think its the switch. If there's not enough coolant then temp isnt going to register with the t-stat correctly.

I'm getting the same problem kind of, except my fan isn't turning on ever as far as I'm noticing and it did when I bought it.


Where is the fan switch? The fan works. I'm wondering if having an air pocket in the system (maybe after I put in a thermostat, [previous owner had work done and the mechanic evidently never put one in, ****ing idiots. But my car idled fine previously.] Maybe I didn't bleed the system well enough. But now I'm noticing the fan isn't kicking on and the heat climbs to 3/4 of the gauge if I let it, I don't want to find out if it'll climb more than that.
