99 si/b18c1 swap won't communicate with scanner for emissions test
Hey whats up people, im looking for a bit of help with the ecu in my car. I currently have a 99 si with a b18c1 swap. idk what ecu i have in it but i took it to get inspected & it threw no emissions to the scanner.
Does anyone know what ecu i need ?
obd2? obd2a or obd2b?
Give me info please i really need it before buying anything.
Someone is selling me a 00 gsr ecu & theres other offers, i just want the correct one to finally get it inspected. Thank you!

You probably currently have an OBD1 ECU but you need an OBD2 ECU for your car, which was originally OBD2b.

Re: 99 si/b18c1 swap won't communicate with scanner for emissions test
Oooh I see thanks for helping..
If my car is obd2b & I have obd1, wouldn't I need an adapting harness?
Questions for anyone who can help*
Does not having the right ecu affect how the car runs?
Is there anyway I can check what kind of ecu I currently have?
Do the years on the ecu have a purpose? (98 GSR Ecu, 00 GSR ecu)
Could I just get any p72 ecu for my b18c1?
Does anyone know of a place I could buy one? Estimate price?
Please help, thanks a lot!!!

2. Find Your ECU and see which one you have. there is also size differnces look on google pics to see the diff sizes between OBD1 and OBD2.
3. a 98 is a OBD2a and a 00 is OBD2b. The hook ups are just a little different on them. Not really sure if a OBD2a harness would hook up to a OBD2b normal or need a jumper.
4. P72 is OBD1 prob what you already have since it cant b read.

Re: 99 si/b18c1 swap won't communicate with scanner for emissions test
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the 99-01 Integra/Civics have an immobilizer in the ECU which will prevent it from starting if used in a car that isn't programmed for that ECU. You could probably do a 96-98 P72 ECU. Do you know if your engine is OBD1 or OBD2?

Here is the ECU page for the 2001 Integra GS-R <--- clickable
Shows part # 37820-P72-A05
Here is the ECU page for the 2000 Integra GS-R <--- clickable
Shows SAME part # 37820-P72-A05
...so at least 2000-2001 Integra GS-R had the immobilizer.
The OP here is going to need a 96-97 Integra GS-R ECU AND a jumper harness. Part number for ECU is 37820-P72-A02. This ECU is OBD2A and thus will need the jumper harness, but it will communicate with emissions scanners, and NOT have the immobilzer.
I guarantee the engine is going to throw all sorts of check engine codes once the correct OBD2 ECU is installed. I'm guessing CKF sensor code, secondary o2 sensor code, and maybe some sort of EVAP codes if the EVAP system isn't hooked up.
Once the correct OBD2 ECU is installed we can help you troubleshoot the codes it will throw.

Re: 99 si/b18c1 swap won't communicate with scanner for emissions test
I believe only 2000-2001 gsr ECUs have immobilizers
http://www.hamotorsports.com/immobil...l-service.html
the 99-00 si p2t does not have one.
You will have to get a pic or determine what ECU is in the car already for someone to provide more detailed help.

Re: 99 si/b18c1 swap won't communicate with scanner for emissions test
OBD2B started in 00 for integras. Immobilizers came into integras in 00. So you cant use a OBD2B Integra ECU due to the immobilizer.
Options:
-use a 99-00 si ECU. Thats what I was using to pass emissions on my ITR swapped EM1. I jist swapped back to my JDM ITR ECU afterwards. You can swap back to the GSR ECU after emssions.
-Use a 99-00 single cam ECU. Just don't beat on the car a few days. VTEC or non VTEC. Doesn't matter. Swap back to the GSR ECU after emssions.
-Use a 96-99 OBD2A Integra ECU (GSR, LS, ITR, whatever) and a OBD2B-OBD2A jumper. This is the most expensive option. But if you found a OBD2A GSR ECU, you could just leave it in there permanently.
*****USDM ECUS ONLY!! JDM ECUS WILL NOT WORK FOR EMISSIONS!
If you have an OBD1 engine, you will have to either install a CKF sensor or use the CKF wiring trick to pass emissions. OBD1 engines didn't have provisions for a CKF, so you'll need a OBD2 oil pump, and the CKF sensor itself. Hopefully nobody cut the wiring off the EM1 harness for the CKF.
You'll also have to make sure that the other OBD2 functions are working. Secondary O2 sensor and maybe EVAP stuff.

Re: 99 si/b18c1 swap won't communicate with scanner for emissions test
Correct, ALL USDM '00 - '01 Integras had immobilizers. Besides the options you listed there are a few guys that can remove the immobilizer and replace it with a dummy unit so there wont be a CEL

Re: 99 si/b18c1 swap won't communicate with scanner for emissions test
OP, your ECU is on the passenger side of the car, behind a plastic panel to your right on the floor (a little kick panel where your feet are). It will be bolted on and plugged in. There is a part number on the ECU which will tell you which ECU it is. Some people chip ECUs and remove this sticker, but there are still ways you could potentially figure it out.
The part number should start with something like 37820-XXX-XXX and will be under a barcode.
JDM ECUs will not connect to the scan tool btw.

isnt a 95 gsr motor obd1?
& if its a obd1 ecu, isnt everything supposed to be connecting well?

yes that is a conversion harness. it won't read through the obd2 port because the ecu doesn't have that capability.

Obd1 ECUs aren't set up like the OBD2 ECU and the code scanners can not connect with them no matter the OBD of the engine.

I have the same issue it won't be cheap to go back, believe me not cheap going to have to see what wires were cut and will have to reroute the wires and will probly have a check engine light come on also when u replug a ob2 ecu, long story short ur ****ed,going to have to find one of those smog shops,or get a legal stand alone.

In a perfect world yea it would work, but u will have to see what was cut,was the knock Senor cut,etc...You will have to do a trail in error and see what happens when u plug the new ecu in, I can bet it won't work, been there with this same issue.

Plus if you don't already you'll need to wire in a secondary oxygen sensor and also do the CKF bypass trick.

Re: 99 si/b18c1 swap won't communicate with scanner for emissions test
So as u can see it is not easy to go back from obd1 to obd2...also now EPA wants to check us more by using infer red lasers at stop light that use cameras for traffic issues, so run the run the test at the stop light and ur comes back as a gross poluter the camera will give u the ticket.
