Default 99 si - 4th gear grind

hi,

looking for some help with a 4th gear grind on a '99 civic. so, if i change gears 3 to 4 normally (like i do from 1 to 2 or 2 to 3), then i get a loud grind that doesn't go away unless i go back to 3 and try again. this doesn't happen if i rev up to about 3500 rpm. also, if i rev to about 2700 rpm and press the clutch, then shift into 4 while very slowly releasing the clutch, it's okay. but during this, the car has to slow down a little so it's not very smooth.

so, i was wondering if anyone has an idea or a list of possibilities of what this might be? a friend told me it might be the synch, but i'm not sure...

thanx in advance.

Synchros.

You should check that your transmission fluid is at the proper level, but it may be best to replace it with genuine Honda MTF or GM Synchromesh. Both are known to help transmission grinds, but don't expect a miracle here.

Unfortunately, the only way to truly remedy the problem is to rebuild or replace the transmission.

Same thing I did. Dropped the transmission myself, bought the 3-4 Honda synchro set ( after my mechanic said that was all I needed ) for around $168 And he replaced it and resealed my transmission for $90 ( BIG time friend). Then just take advantage of that and get a new clutch kit and your flywheel resurfaced while you're at it!

thanks for the input guys. i'm gonna take it to honda to have them test drive it for free and get a friend to change the synchros. hopefully that'll take care of it.
