You loose the ability to control.
Unless you want to try and find all of the servos and what not that is needed to control the units. IF they even fit around or in the exisiting area.

Here are some useful links found by searching:

Basically you need everything that is behind the climate control. The 96-98 is mechanical and the 99-00 is electronic. It's not an easy change over.

Just to add... this swap can be done. but it isn't easy and it isnt cheap.
From the SI you will need.
Heaterbox (has the temp control servo on it)
The blower box (has a different circuit/relay then the 96)
2 climate control sub harnesses
and cabin harness (which has an ECU plug on it - OUCH, need to change ecus too )
then you obviously need the climate control and that isnt a perfect fit into a 96 dash so you might as well throw the the SI dash in there as well.
Now, there is no denying that you need the climate control and the heaterbox. I am sure if you could find an electrical engineer, you could rewire everthing to work with just those pieces, but is that cheaper?
PIcture? how bout this.
