Hey Ron, just wondering how long have you been using the Valvoline in your car & how often do you do the 3x3? I'm gonna do it on my Civic, but the Honda ATF is like $9 a quart

I've been using Valvoline Max Life Dex/Merc ATF (Honda-recommended) for about 40K miles. Seems to be fine. The service manual recommends replacing the ATF every 90K miles. I may do another 3X3 after about 70K miles.

Yes 90K miles, under normal conditions. Same for MTF.

I don't think anyone's car here classifies for "normal conditions" maintenance.

That's possible. The service manual recommends replacing the ATF and MTF every 30K miles under severe conditions.

A little UPDATE

just passed the 1 year mark on my thread over here. Guess what? Have dropped all 9 quarts out (3x3 quarts) and no problems what so ever.

Car currently has 190k, so a year later, and 30k more mile...no problems whatsoever.

If anyone is reading this...change yours, it makes a big difference.

Just a little update. For those that see an atf filter for the automatic civics if you look in the civic helms manual, page 815 or page 14-137, you will notice it resembles the "atf strainer". There is a tear down diagram that shows it and also instructions to clean it. Its actually inside the transmission and you cannot get to it. I think people got around this by getting the honda civic hx transmission filter and custom hooked it up to the return cooler line.
