99 Civic Si - Shifter gets hot while driving
Quick question.
Shifter gets hot while driving during the hot *** day, ive heard it could have something to do with your cat but my car has a straight pipe exhaust all the way back.
doesn't really bug me but I was just wondering why it happened. does not happen at night, it gets warm but not as hot as it does during the day. i am thinking its a combination from the heat outside and the exhaust.

its a combo of the sun and exhaust. let me guess aluminum shiftknob, probably dark colored... same as mine. gets hot as **** during the day and the reason its warm at night is your..... HAND is on it!

No cat= no heat shield= excessive heat. I bet it's not only the shift **** getting hot but everything in that area. My friend's Dakota caught on fire because of this very thing. Try to figure out how to put the heat shield back.

Since you say you have a "straight pipe exhaust", I'm going to assume you removed the factory heat shield. It's there for a reason, and that, combined with increased ambient temperature, is probably what's causing this.

The ignition point of carpet is so high, you'd be cooking inside the car before the carpet caught on fire, and I have a feeling your engine would be getting ready to grenade.
I was also making a Lamborghini joke. Or maybe it was Ferrari that had that problem. I don't remember.

Meh, that car wouldn't be runing, and you would litteraly be cooking inside of it before that happened.
it's a 4 banger, those sheilds are there to make the cabin more comfortable, it's not just going to bursts into flames beucase you removed the sheilds.
IIRC, they both have issues with fire. again, IIRC, Ferrari is the worst.
Last I checked my civic doesn't just catch on fire while cruising down the road.

don't forget our carpet also has backing on it, and in a lot of places there is sound deadening. (yes I know Honda cheaped out big time on that)
Is it possible? sure, maybe. But remember, you not only have to get the metal hot enough to catch the carpet on fire, but that sound deadening and the carpets backing.
I just don't see how the exhuast is going to do anything except heat the cabin up a little more. Really, our cars our diesel and can't catch **** on fire. If people didn't already know a diesel trucks/cars exhuast can be hot enough to catch **** on fire.

If you have a cheap aluminum shifter it will get hot like crazy. My car came with a cheapy ebay aluminum shifter and I couldn't touch it it got so hot. My skunk2 shifter is steel and has never gotten so hot I couldn't touch it.

My skunk 2 shifter gets a little warm, but no where near as hot as the immensley heave shift **** thats on it. This is the worst summer of my life, 11 straight days and counting of 95-105 degree days has my hand alittle sore. Columbus oh is not supposed to be this hot!

When I end up driving stick in the summer, I keep a towel in the car next to me to allow me to grip the stupid shift ****; it's my only recommendation.
