99 Civic DX started to over heat today...
Hey guys,
So I drove for about 120 miles today going about 70+mph, while on the freeway, there was some bumper to bumper traffic (Los Angeles) and I notice while at the stop and go traffic, my temp gauge started to climb a little towards the half way mark, but as soon as the car started moving (air cooling the radiator) the temps would fall a little.
As I got off the freeway, the temps got a little hotter, a tad over halfway, and I quickly got to where I was going. Popped the hood, and saw the reserve reservoir backed up all the way to the top, and the radiator was kinda cool to the touch...
I also noticed that the fan was not turning on properly, so I will diagnose this tomorrow (anyone have a quick jump method to have fan on while ACC is on? perhaps unplugging the thermostat temp switch and bridging a connection?)
So I ended putting some coolant or rather water in the radiator, it took a little, and ended up hard wiring the fan straight to the battery so I could make it home.
If anyone knows whats going on, please let me know it's my daily driver and dont want to miss work or stress out on this crap anymore.
LOL
thanks guys

Coolant is green..
I will replace the thermo fan switch tomorrow, thermostat, rad cap, and flush system.
will report back once completed.
hopefully this fixes it.

Unplug your fan switch connector from the fan switch on the thermostat housing, and jump the two terminals together. The fan should come on then, when you turn the key to the ON 2nd position.

jumped the switch today and drove it on freeway, when I got on it, the temp started to rise at bout halfway mark, I think the coolant is leaking somewhere but not 100% sure...
I find that I have to keep adding a small amount of coolant, this probably is causing the car to lose pressure in the cooling system and introduce air into the system which will caue the coolant not to run/cycle properly.

is your car smoking? it could be that your burning the coolant... or look for leaks on radiator and hoses... or maybe your thermostat has gone bad?

I would start with the simple things. First change out your thermostat and cap, flush if need be. If you have already done this and you are leaking coolant I would look for drips or that sweet antifreeze smell. next I would check your oil for milkshake. If that all pans out fine I would pull your plugs, and look at the piston top and plug - leaking coolant into a cylinder will steam clean all the carbon off and you will have one shiny plug and piston top, while the others are black from carbon.

Could also be an issue. I know on my older vehicles I usually drill a small 1/16" hole in the top lip of the thermostat and position it at the 12:00 oclock position on the head to help with air purging...

If no leaks, coolant is good, change thermo, be sure that your radiator fan switch is good (fan comes on after a while). Look around the radiator to see any cracks, check the hoses for cracks/rips etc. If it was your headgasket, white pouts of smoke would come out of the exhaust.
