Default 99 Civic with "cut" springs

Hey guys

I bought a used 1999 Honda Civic Hatchback and im Loving it! The only thing that I have an issue with is that the previous owner "cut" the springs on it to lower it. This creates a horrible ride sometimes when you go over speed bumps or pt holes and I want to get it fixed.

So my question to all of you is... Do I need to JUST replace the spring on the front and back OR do I need to replace the whole suspension system?

This is what I was looking at and planned to buy them from here -> http://www.hondapartsnow.com/parts-l...-absorber.html

...unless you guys think I should go elsewhere. I'm all ears!

I REALLY appreciate the help guys!

you should be able to find a set of OEM used springs on craigslist or ebay for pretty cheap, if the shocks are not blow you could just swap the springs, if you need to replace the shocks I have used kyb gr2 as stock replacement and they worked well for a stock replacement

Ok great, that really helps Egsleepercivic!

I am not very experienced with this so how would you suggest I find out if the shocks are blown?

if you see any oil on them, otherwise with cut springs and the age of them if they are original I would just assume they are done....shocks ware out like shoes sometimes you don't notice they are gone until you put new ones on

You can just replace the springs in the front and the back. Depending on what you plan to do with it will determine if you should change out the strut at the same time you are changing out the spring. If you don't plan on altering the suspension again then i would say put all new springs and struts so you have a smooth ride. If you plan on putting a full lowering suspension later then just change out the springs.

Dont forget their are fully height adjustable full body coilovers, with these you can adjust either your ride height or spring preload. Its about as much as a good shock/strut combo.

Yeah, The main reason why I want the work done is because the ride right now is rough and I can't go over a speed bump over 5mph without feeling it...hard.

Also I don't like the look of a lowered honda and want to restore the car to factory height.

Do you think it is necessary to replace the whole suspension system for this reason? Or will JUST replacing the springs fix this problem?

ok, thats good to know. Thanks slomofo

I gotta take it in to a mechanic to see what is going on...just don't wanna get screwed. Anyone know got a price range of what I should expect to replace...

1) Just the springs

2) Springs and struts

I have a set of stock springs you can have for free if you'd like them. Pm me if you want them.

Slomofo is probably correct though. I would guess the struts are shot so replacing them as an entire unit may be more practical for you.
