99 B16A in 93 Civic DX Vtec Question

ok My buddy has a 1993 Honda Civic dx Hatchback. When he floors it the vtec kicks in fine @ 5700. He stops at a stoplight and then the check engine light comes on and when he floors it again the vtec wont come.He resets his ecu and floors it again, vtec kicks in fine. But the check engine light comes on again, and then the vtec wont engage until he resests his ecu again. He is wired OBD1 with P30 spoon chipped ecu. any thoughts??

did it just start happening? and it could be that he may be loosing oil pressure.

Didi you guys do the swap yourselves? Or did a shop? i would take it to the shop if the did it, or maybe the people who chipped and tuned it. And if you guys did it yourselves then take it to a mechnic.

You should probably check the code. I'm not positive whether vtec works without knock sensor, but P30's run knock sensor in case you didn't hook that up, but I'm not sure if the Spoon program eliminates that. Knock sensor is code 23.

loose plug(s)? check ecu codes like the other member said, then check connections

Check your knock sensor... only thing I can think of that might not be wired up. But I dont think it would make the ECU run in safe mode... but who knows... trial and error wont hurt
