99-00 civic si
so i read somewhere that the 99-00 civic si and the 97+ prelude (all models) ran off premium. is that true? i really like both cars, but i cant afford another car that runs on premium. i already have an 85 mustang gt that does, so i need a car that runs on regular with a 5spd and a trunk. if those cars only ran on that kind of gas, would you all recommend the 98 civic ex? thanx for the help

my 99 civic si has never seen regular 88 octane gas til about 2 months go and to be quite honest with you it runs pretty much the same. same if not better mpg and power is pretty much the same. i still put some premium vpower ever 2 or so fill ups to make sure. in other words yes it can run off regular. I had an old h22 prelude that said premium only and also ran pretty much the same with lower octane gas.

Re: 99-00 civic si (lucivar)
From what ive been told.. the si has high compression and a higher flash point so it needs fuel that burns hotter. if you run the cheaper fuel in higher compression cars you run a chance of knock (combustion before spark). correct me if im wrong though

These type of threads crack me up. There's a guy that can afford to fork out 10 grand for a car but can't afford the $3/fillup difference in price for gas. You people crack me up.
Assuming you fill up once a week like I do, you're looking at a whopping $12/month difference between cheap and premium gas. Hell, let's go out on a limb and say that you fill up TWICE a week (8 times a month). That's an extra $24 a month. If you can't afford to shell out an extra $24 a month you need to stop driving.

You sir speak the truth. To the OP, its really not THAT big of a difference in price, so just get the EM1, you will like the car .

The problem with premium gas & your 85 GT has nothing to do with premium vs. regular - it has to do with the fact that your 85 GT is a gas hog.
When you get 30+ mpg the price difference becomes minimal, as others are pointing out in a more mocking way.
My advice, as the owner of a 1997 Del Sol VTEC (same engine as in the 99-00 Si) is don't sweat it. DO make a habit of staying away from stations who don't post their premium prices on their sign, because they tend to wildly fluctuate their premium pump charges.

Saving a few bucks a month on cheap gas < Not having to buy a new b16 because of the stupid *** logic of creating detonation which in turn destroyed pistons.
