Default 98 Honda Civic eg clutch grinding/scraping

I've got a 98 Honda Civic with 167k miles so far. Just recently while driving I noticed that while I'm accelerating through the first 3 gears it sounds like a metal on metal grind/scrape noise until i push down on the clutch (the sound usually kicks in just as i exceed 1800-2000 rpm). Even while decelerating the noise continues. On occasion it makes that same noise especially in the 2nd gear a lot louder and you can still hear it well in 3rd gear. Also in addition, last night I had to run to the store. When I went to start up the car, after I went to release the clutch it stayed down... I'm guessing the slave cylinder is going up but could that also be whats causing the metallic grinding noise? I had to manually lift back up the clutch pedal with my hand and it then finally got that resistance back. Any information back about what could possibly be going wrong would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The noise is almost surely a bad input shaft bearing (or other main bearing) in the transmission.

The pedal problem is either air in the clutch hydraulic system or a bad master or slave cylinder.

Ah ok. Thank you so much. One last question. does that mean i'll have to buy a whole new transmission? Or is it something cheap to fix?

Transmission bearings can be replaced. It's worth doing if you can do the work. It would be expensive to have a mechanic do the work, so in this case consider buying a replacement transmission.
