98 Honda Civic DX - acceleration hesitation from 1st to 2nd gear only
Hey guys,
First time poster, long time Honda owner.
I have a 1998 Honda Civic DX 2 door coupe with 179,000 miles on it.
When I first start up my car, back out of the driveway, and start accelarating forward, the car will accelerate through the first gear normally. Then it hesitates to shift for a few seconds from that 1st to 2nd gear. I press on the gas, but it hesitates to accelerate, and lately I have heard a popping sound that has accompanied it. After a few seconds of hesitation, it will finally accelerate quickly through the 2nd gear, and all is normal for the rest of the ride. There is no hesitation going in and out of any gear for the remainder of the ride.
The only time the hesitation occurs is when I initally accelerate forward after starting the car to go to work, and also to go home from work. Even if I leave my car and don't drive it for a couple hours, the hesitation problem does not occur when I start driving it again. It appears to only happen when I don't drive it for 8 hours or more.
Any suggestions?

Don't just keep pressing on the gas, and when it's time to shift, but let off the gas like on a manual transmission to help it shift. That would help a little but I can't tell you what your actual problem is
