98 hatch broken rod or what
wassup my bro in law was driving his 98 hatch with a weak clutch (he is not too car savy) this weekend, on the freeway about 85MPH. he started going up a hill and the clutch started slipping bad he kept going (I don't know how high the car was reving when the clutch was slipping) after smoke started comming out he pulled over. the clutch was gone he towed it home put in two quarts of oil and started it up. there was a loud clunking noise almost like the valves were hitting the pistons and one cylinder was not firing. I checked the timing it did not jump or break the belt so I am suspecting a broken rod because of the loud clunking inside the engine and major oil leak now. Could it also be a spun bearing? i really don't want to tow it to a shop just to have it towed home to do the motor swap in my garage what else should I look at before I break him the bad news. P.S. if anybody has a y7 or y8 motor in so cal let me know I'm pretty sure i will need it.
thanks
