98 EX vtec without a vtec valve cover

I have a 98 ex that is supposedly vtec (even when i search on carfax it says its vtec), but on the valve cover it just says honda. Did I get giped? I searched and I saw this thread https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=239476, but guessing from the guys member name his car is a 93.

96-00 EX's don't have vtec written on the valve cover. Look for a vtec solenoid.

If it has VTEC, it will have one of these:

The D16Y8 motors were the SOHC VTEC motors. The D16Y7 were the Non-VTEC. The Y8 came in the EX models. Also like everyone said, look for the VTEC solenoid next to the valve cover.

Same question only for the 92-95 run, did either the SI or EX in any of those years have VTEC on the valve cover? Cause ive got a 93 ex and it just says honda on the valve cover but its got the soleniod, and its d16z6 which is definitely VTEC, but did any of EGs actually say VTEC on em?

si did not come with it on the valve cover so someone might of swapped it but all exs 93 and up should have it on them unless someone changed it

Yes 94 and 95 d16z6 on ex coupe and every year on Si model, some were even had black valve cover and 92-95 Si models included (H) VTEC on valve cover. PS all ex coupes 96-00 have vtec none say it on the valve cover and they are all aluminum colors.

If i had a non vtech d16y7 i would get a d16y8 valve cover, y8 cams and the selonoid , u can have vtec https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif plus if u put a larger intake manifold ,get ready for boost!!
