98 ek o2 censor issues, please help
alright here goes, 6 months ago i had an issue where my engine and electrical system would surge/pulse(for lack of better term). Along with the pulsing my speedometer started going haywire. i read the cel and was confirmed lower and upper o2's were no good. i replaced both and issue went away. later got into a front end collision that ended up bending the top of upper o2, replaced it but still have issues with speedo and surging. I've done some searching...no luck.
by the way...
this is my first thread with ht and just want to say thanks for all the knowledge/help the site provides, not only is Honda tech the best freaking resource for people in honda community but its allowed me to learn more about my car and my abilities to fix my ish on my own. thanks for all the help even if i don't get it with this issue...

forgot to mention alternator went out when problem first came about. replaced it, currently not running a stereo/ac so neither of those should be the issue, thanks

i dont see how an 02 sensor can even cause yoru rpm gauge to move or pulse liek you state.
i would look for a good connection on the back of the dash tiself or a good connection on teh speed sensor.
i would aslo look to see how many volts your car is charging at.
any check engine lights?

check the #15 fuse under the dash. I'm willing to bet this is your problem if the alternator had an issue and jumpy speedo. bet your old alternator is still good.

You should have a spot under your dash, leftish side. There will be a plastic thing with a handle. remve it and there are fuses underneath. under the plate you popped out will be a diagram of which fuse is what. Locate #15 on the diagram which should say VSS/Alternator. It will be a 7.5A fuse. If its bad theres your problem. replace it and your good t go.
sorry to bud you man, seems your the only one willing and knowledgeable about this ish, found the fuse, pulled it(not blown) but put a new 7.5 in....started my care and same surging issues, any other ideas?
Is it electrical surging? like lights going wacky? or is it an Idle surge? if the idle is jump
I don't mind helping. Thats why I joined the forum.
electrical surging, correct: the dome lights, gauge lights, speedo acting goofy, headlights, engine seems as if changing idle but not. the engines' pulsing is in sync with the electrical surge but doesnt really affect daily driving at all. still something that drives me to the edge ,and i refuse to not do something about it. whats wierd is i had this probllem before and fixed it by swapping out both o2 censors(threw a cel and read both were toast so just replaced). so the problem went away, then my alternator went out so i swapped it/got new battery and all was good. i was smooth sailing for a few months got in accident, had to replace full front end including my rad. core support, headlights, radiator, a bent upper o2, and all front end cosmetics...problem came back after that.
so not good on the electrical aspect on hondas(im still newbin) but am not afraid to correct my ish with some help. so again THANK YOU so much (and sorry or the life story of my car).

Jump the service connector now to pull the CEL codes. Post all codes that you recover.
Go back and remove 7.5A fuse #15 under the dash. Make sure it is not blown and also inspect the slot where it inserts. Do you see any signs of damage or burning?

I have the same problem with my civic, I am throwing a lower o2 code and all my lights surge whenever I drive and my speedo works ever so often. I have yet to replace that o2 so I sure hope that is the problem... I never thought a o2 could make either of these problems... im in for the answer

I just got a P0420 code today on my 98 Accord LX (4 cyl). I was wondering which O2 sensor did you replace on your previous 98's? The one by the exhaust manifold, the one by the catalytic converter or both? Thanks.

Re: 98 ek o2 censor issues, please help
Not sure about the Accord, but a bad O2 sensor won't throw code P0420 in a Civic. Only a bad cat or an exhaust leak will throw this code.
