98 Civic - surging idle when A/C is on
Hi guys,
I have a 1998 Honda Civic Coupe EX (Manual) with 165k on the odometer.
The problem is: when I turn on the A/C, my car idles weird, it goes up and down.
What's worse is when I'm driving.. when I'm cruising, the car would stutter, seems like the compressor is turning on/off/on/off all the time..
I've just bought the car about 2 months ago, when I first bought it, it was working fine but it wasn't blowing COLD COLD air, so I went to the auto parts store and bought some Freon and charged the system myself.. Now it's blowing cold air BUT as I mentioned, it "feels" like the compressor is turning on/off/on/off,repeat.
Is my compressor slowly dying on me? The clutch of the compressor? Alternator? Idle air control valve?
Please help me out guys, I would really appreciate it
Thank you.

Re: Car runs weird when A/C is on
U filled it with too much freon....same thing happened to me. U need to release some freon until it stops cycling all the time.

Re: Car runs weird when A/C is on
Is there a way to release the freon myself or do I need to go to a shop?
Thanks
-- On a side note, I cleaned the Idle Air Control Valve today and wow, what a difference! my car drives a lot better, it stutters less now, but I still believe I put too much freon in there..
Please let me know if I could do it myself or not?
Thanks

Yes you can. Its like letting air out of your tire. It will get on your engine, just wash ur bay afterwards. Do it with the a/c running so you know when the cycling slows down, and then you can stop.
Someone will post here saying that its illegal.... if ur worried have a shop do it.

Ok.
Hmmm like letting out the tire pressure huh?
I'll have to try it out to see if it'll release the pressure.
Thank you very much!

I've let out a few and it's still doing it, I think I might need to let it out a little more...
I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks.
