98 Civic Running Poorly
Hello Honda Fans,
I'm in need of your help, I'm working on my friend's 98 Honda Civic with the 1.6L engine and manual trans. I'm stumped on the problem.
Couple of weeks ago, he was driving it, when all of a sudden it loses power. He tells me that it didn't over heat. It idles rough and hesitates reeving up without a load. Can no longer get up to speed.
The engine is sending codes 71 and 74 ; cylinder #1 and #4 misfire. ( thanks for the write up on pulling codes, superb ). The exhaust feels like a misfire.
After hearing it, I was certain it was the timing belt but after removing the top cover, it seems the timing is correct and the belt looks fresh ( with out wear ).
When I advance the timing, it idles better but still hesitates.
The Cap, Rotor, Plugs and Wires are all new.
Spark Plugs for Cylinder #2,#3,#4 come out smelling like gas. Plug #1 has got a nice white combustion evidence.
No mixing of oil and coolant, levels are good.
I'm planning on taking off the lower timing belt cover next to confirm the timing is correct.... sometimes the balancer pulley mark isn't accurate enough to catach a tooth off.
Also considering a compression check, but I don't have the tool yet.
Any thoughts ?
Thanks,
Aaron

Re: 98 Civic Running Poorly
Test the coil and ICM. If those are fine, compression test the cylinders.

Re: 98 Civic Running Poorly
You don't have to remove the lower timing belt cover, there are marks on the crank pulley and the cover. You need to line them up and verify mechanical timing properly.
