98 Civic - Idle Wandering after tune up
98 Hatch
Automatic
Purple (Man Plum)
Hi all, finally got my car started last night. And now my car wanders at idle. somewhere around 1000-1500 rpm. This was after the initial warm up phase.
I had the dizzy off to clean the terminals and look for the condition the dizzy as I had sputtering issues. The adjusting hole were aligned center, and when I reinstalled it was all placed the same. I did change the spark plugs though..so would that cause the timing to be off as the gap was almost double (worn electrode)

Re: Idle Wandering
Sounds like your IACV(Idle Air Control Valve) to me since it is surging in that RPM range after the engine is warmed up. I have a link below that will show you how to clean it. Its easy to do.

I got HGK plugs, read these forums before I went.
I did some troubleshooting, and once I unplugged my MAP sensor idle went straight to 1500. I'm thinking there is a vacuum leak. The o-right had whitish (corrosion) dust on it, thus where the leak is. I'm going to get some blue o ring sealer and try that.

Try regapping your plugs too. The NGKs I got were gapped to .032 instead of .044. I had a leak in the iacv gasket that caused my engine to do similar. For a temporary seal I used blue sensor-safe RTV and slathered it on along the joint. Was that way for a good 2k miles with no problems.

Well. I used the blue sensor safe sealant on the IACV "o-ring" and on the map sensor o-ring with no improvement. I also followed the steps to clean out the IACV.
I'm going to disconnect my map sensor when I take it to get inspected. I'm going to replace the MAP sensor later. How much will they run? also the IACV?

Have you actually checked for vac leaks? Try putting your hand over the throttle mouth and see if the car dies.

I'll give that a try Joe. So if I put my hand over the mouth and it dies, then I have no leaks.
If it dies I'm going to attempt an idle relearn as seen here by googling. As I did pull the ECU and clean the circuit board.

Okay, so I went back out, fresh mind and fresh coffee in hand. I took the TB apart and clean the bejesus out of it.
Reassembled the TB and started the car. Car warmed up, and the idle hunt began. I read a post to cover the IACV hole inside the TB. So I did so, only to find the car come to a slow grumble and not die. So is my IACV leaking? or TB gasket?
