Default 98 Civic EX not starting [completely]

My friend was telling me an interesting story on how he left his car in the heat for like 8 hours, and when he got in and turned the ignition nothing happened. the lights came on, the windows, radio worked, but the car just didn't make any movement/sound. he called me up asking for a ride and I agreed, then he called me back 5 minutes later saying he got it started; apparently out of rage he shifted through the gears forcefully and turned the ignition hard repeatably without holding the clutch down.

now today, another 8 hour day in the sun, it happened to him again. so he called me up and he said if he gets it to work like last time he won't need me for a ride, so i said ok. 30 minutes pass by and nothing, so I go pick him up.. regardless of looking at the motor/battery terminal/etc we left. He's gonna get it towed to his house for free later tonight.. But what do you think the problem is?
Perhaps the starter needs to be replaced? Or did the temperature take its toll on an ageing battery?

Cliff notes: key was put in the ignition, turned - nothing.

Car = 98 EX 5spd, stock with AEM shortram

Park it in the shade tomorrow. Although I doubt there's going to be a difference, maybe not.

It doesn't get that hot in So Cal... Could be the starter is crapping out on him. If you guys can duplicate the problem, try lightly tapping on the starter with a hammer or something while cranking the key and see if that gets things spinning. Sometimes starter rotors will bind in the housing when the bearings go out.

The main relay will allow it to crank but not start.

There are a million things that will cause a car to not start. Your solution is not a blanket one.

so i took my civic and picked him up
went to his car, waited for the cell phone to connect to Triple A so they can come and tow it, I take his key and walk over to the car, turn the ignition and boom - it turned on like a beauty.

we drove it back to my house, he shut it off for about 2 minutes, then restarted it.. it kinda struggled for a second then it started. Tomorrow comes the dissection
