Ok I have a 98 honda civic ex with ABS & rear drums. I want to swap to rear disc & keep ABS. I already bought a rear disc swap from a 99 Acura GSR with ABS sensors.
1) Now my questions are can I use a 99-00 Si porportioning valve (non ABS) with this swap or does it have to be a valve from a gsr?
2) Will the stock ABS computer work even though it is now rear disc?
3) Are the drum brake ABS sensors the same as the disc ABS sensors?

Any other problems you guys can think of that I might run into???


Please dont give me answers like just take out ABS because thats not what I want to do.

use what ever came off the doner car, so yes your gsr parts.

i don't remember how different they are but i know that the 96-00 civic proportioning valve design is different than the 88-95 civic/90-00 integra design. so you might have to bend a couple of brake lines to make it work. be careful. i'd just use the 99-00 prop valve.

The GSR valve looks totally diffrent due to it mounting in a diffrent spot.. It also has a diffrent part #.

I think your best bet is to find someone with a canadian SiR (EM1). At least some of them have ABS, compare it to what you have as well as ABS integras.

I thought ABS honda's all come with Rear Disc? from what i've seen execept for the american em1

cause i have drums on my 98 dx and no abs.
but my friends 99 si does.

No, for '92 - '95s that was true. But for whatever reason honda used rear drums and ABS on the '96 - '00 EXs. The US Si's had rear discs, but no ABS. The canadian SiRs are the only '96 - '00 civics in north america that had both rear discs and ABS so far as i'm aware.

You are correct, Finding a canadian SIR porp valve is going to be like finding a needle in a hay stack. I just can't believe there isn't really anyone out the that has tried this swap. I guess no one cares about ABS except me.

Wouldn't the 95-97 del sol vtec have the same prop valve as the canadian 96-00 sir? They have abs and rear disks.

No, they're set up exactly the same as the '92 - '95 Civics.

Since these questions keep popping up, I've deceided to try to answer every conceivable combination of them.

1992 - 1995 civic rear disc swap:
-If only upgrading rear brakes use a proporting valve from a '92 - '95 civic Si hatch, except the '94 Si ABS. Keep stock MC
-if upgrading both front and rear disc brakes to integra units use a non ABS integra proporting valve and a '91 EX MC, or non ABS integra MC/brake booster combo.

1996 - 2000
-(non-abs models) If only upgrading rear brakes retain the stock proporting valve and MC
-(non-abs models) If upgrading both front and rear brakes to integra/Si units retain the stock proporting valve, use a '99 - '00 Si MC
-(abs models) (this is where the OP comes in) already have the larger integra style front brakes, the theory is use the prop valve found on the ABS '99 - '00 Canadain civic SiR, although considering that the '96 - '00 Civic CXs and Sis use the same prop valve its entirely possible that the Canadain SiR and US EX ABS coupes use identical prop valves as well.

With ABS the prop valve is part of the ABS, so you have to use a 92-95 ABS pump or a 94-00 Teg pump. It's no big deal switching to rear disk and not swapping ABS pumps just make sure your drums and disks have the same spacing between teeth on the speed ring...

you are right on the '92 - '95 ABS civics don't have a true prop valve, your probably right about the '94 - '01 integras as well, I just don't have one here to look at. But you can''t use either pump on a '96 - '00 civic. '96 - '00 ABS civics actually have a prop valve as well. I think if it was me i'd try swapping on the integra rear discs and hope for the best, see if the ABS light comes on.

But wouldn't that mean anyone doing a rear disc swap on a 96-00 civic can use a 96-00 porp valve?? I was under the impression this valve wouldn't work.

I am still confused as hell. I pretty much have 3 options.
1) Use a my stock EX valve and hope for the best.
2) Use a 99-00 Si valve and hope for the best.
3) Try and find a Canadian Sir valve which will most likely never happen.

I would keep your factory proportioning valve.

edit: just for clarity, the 96-00 manual transmission civics came with rear drum, NO ABS.

2 isn't even really an option, the ABS prop valve is completely different, even externally, as in it wont even fit physically. 1 is probably your best bet. Seeing as how I actually live in Canada i'll try to get some info on the SiR prop valve.

'96 civic LX sedans and EX coupes could both be had with a manual transmission and ABS, for that one year only..

Why do you think #2 isn't a option?
The SI porp valve looks like my EX valve and atleast its for disc brakes.
Any more info on the SIR valve?

take a look at hondaautomotiveparts.com compare the 2, the way the lines go in is different, the body of the valve is physically different, they're also refered to differently, one is dual proportioning, the ABS one is just proportioning valve.

Not yet, I might be able to find something out this weekend.

Bumpity bump. Any progrss on this from anyone? I just picked up everything from a 99 Si but my 00 EX 4dr 5spd has ABs and I plan on keeping it.
