98 civic ex - Cant get key fob to work
I am trying to get my key fob to interact with my 98 honda civic.
I have tried the normal sequence of:
Turn ignition to II
Hold down valet button on stereo until the door locks cycle.
Press lock or unlock on key fob.
Turn off ignition and release valet button.
What happens is that when i push lock or unlock in valet mode it DOES cycle the locks. That is, the key fob does activate the locks. But as soon as i turn the key off and try to unlock or lock the car nothing happens.
My car is a 1998 Honda civic ex with the stock stereo.
Any ideas?

U need to hold down the valet button the entire time u are doing the programming. Otherwise it will not work.
Press valet, hold
Keep holding while the door lock cycle once
Still holding valet button
Press lock or unlock on key fob
Door will cycle once more to confirm programming success
Turn ign off
Let go valet
That's what I had to do..
Try that.

Yeah that's exactly what I've tried.
When I push lock or unlock the doors cycle.
But then once I take the key out the key fob doesn't do anything.

Ive tried exactly those steps.
I tried it again tonight careful to do everything exactly as written.
But the same thing happens. I get to step 4 and the doors DO cycle when i hit either button on the key fob.
But once i turn the ignition off and try the key fob it doesnt do anything except flash its little red light.
I have put in a fresh battery to rule that out.
Also, ive had the car for two years and have never had the keyless entry working. Presumably it worked at some point for the old lady who owned it before me but never for me.

First diagram:
Are one of these^ possibly the problem?
- lf any door is open, you cannot lock or unlock the door with the transmitter.
- The doors do not lock or unlock with the transmitter if the ignition key is inserted in the ignition switch.

Post again when you have it.
Does your car have the stock security system? Any security system?

It does not have an aftermarket security system.
I'm not 100% sure whether or not it has a factory alarm.
At the least without the key fob working I've never armed it.
Is there an easy way to check and be sure?

Re: 98 civic ex - Cant get key fob to work
would I be able to splice into those wired to Install an aftermarket one? That's only because I want the sensitivity and I put an aftermarket stereo in the vehicle. It is a 1998 honda civic EX 2 door coupe with a manual transmission.

Yes, for lock and unlock. You can use the wiring diagram from 12volt.com .. thats what i did to install remote start on my 98 lx.
