98 civic dx: power steering belt tensioner
There's an annoying squeaking coming from my power steering belt I believe.. the sound is in that area and when spray a little water on it the squeak goes away momentarily. I've tried belt dressing but that only works for a couple days and the noise comes back. Is there a belt tensioner on the ps pump?? I can't seem to find it.. maybe I'm just blind. Or how else can I remedy this? I've fixed it on other cars but never this one. It's a 1998 Civic DX with a d16y7.. help me out boys spanks

Re: 98 civic dx: power steering belt tensioner (braypunt)
It's probably just time for a new belt. The whole power steering pump moves down a bracket to relieve the tension to get it off.

Just wondering...did you put the PS on the DX yourself? I though DX didn't come with it and you had to buy some k frame or something? Just curious.

Got ya.
Personally, I like the feel of the road w/o PS but was just curious because I've always heard they were non-power and non-ps models. Thanks for clearing that up.

LOL, its all good. I had ps in my old accord and when I went from that to the non having DX, it was a pain to adjust. I'd have to back up, go forward, back up go forward a couple times to get her parked correctly. But now anytime I drive a car with ps I just about rip the wheel off from thinking I have to turn it hard.

hey guys i looked but there is no WING NUT. I just see 1 bolt to loosen the tension on the ps pump but "tensioner"?? does that make sense? I will take pics soon

There is no actual tensioner... the pump sliding up and down the pump bracket with the movement of that bolt adjusts the tension, then the side bolts lock it into place.

Alright guys I finally got a picture.. as you can see, there are only 2 bolts for the ps pump, the bottom one is the the one that you can adjust.. for instance increase or decrease tension in the belt. But there are no other bolts such as a tensioner. Yea, you guys said there's no tensioner, how would you adjust tension then? Basically move the pump by hand and adjust tension that way.. then tighten it?

You put a 1/2 inch breaker bar or rachet in the square hole to give leverage when adjusting the belt.

That's right, sorry guys. I was thinking of the B-series power steering pump. This way is easier.

Ahhhhh got it. Never even noticed that square hole.
Well I just got to adjusting it, and it helped, but there is still a bit of squeaking.
Is it possible/wise to adjust the belt tension with the car running?

Did you replace the belt yet? If it's still squeaking with it tightened, it's done... replace it. You don't want to make the belt too tight because that will just cause you more problems in the end, believe me.

It's always good to try what might end up saving you a couple bucks, but it didn't work, so the time has come to fork it out. If you overtighten the belt too much, you could damage the pump. With a 1/2" drive breaker bar in that hole, you could get ALOT of leverage...
