98 civic Automatic Trans gone?
Hi All, please help. This morning my daily driver 98 civic's transmission failed. I came to a atop and as I started to accelerate it went from 1st gear to no
nothing...Neutral and revved up. I stopped and tried reverse and drive, nothing. Got out checked fluid, nice and full, clean. Shut it off and when I restarted it did go into 1st again and then
same thing. It now does nothing, will not go into gear. Car has 155K and has had no problems. Any ideas? Tranny gone, torque converter? I really need to get it fixed as I don't have any other transportation.
Thank you all
Just got engine codes, P0700, P0740, P0730. Doesn't sound good.

Re: 98 civic Automatic Trans gone?
Hi Tony,
I did a fluid change last fall as don't believe this car had ever had it changed. I used Honda ATF, it was fine until yesterday.
Transmission fluid was full and didn't smell or seem burnt.
Also tried it out when I got home and it went into drive, after about a minute in drive it was like it was in neutral again.
Thank you,
Joe

I would say the transmission is dead.
The cost to rebuild the transmission is more than the value of the car in most cases or even the cost of a rebuilt transmission is likely more than the value of the car.
A used transmission is a crap shoot.
The question is, what is the value of the car to you? If you love the car, the expense of the rebuilt might be worth it to you.
There may be some rehabilitative things you could do like cleaning out the valve bodies but it still means removing and dismantling the transmission in hopes the clutches still have life to them. But to me, if you are going that far, you might as well rebuild the whole transmission.

Yeah I wish it could swap to a standard, way easier to deal with!! My last civic was a standard.
So the tranny was toast... I ended up getting one from a really reputable junkyard. It had 97K
miles on it and was guaranteed. Installed over the weekend and it work great!! Thanks for the
replies!
