Default 98 to 99 tail light conversion question

I have a 98 coupe and I'm putting some 99-00 tail lights on it. Problem is my rear turn signal bulb is clear because the 98 has the amber corner lenses. With the 99-00 the bottoms are clear and so I need an amber bulb. The turn signal bulb I have now is a 7440 but I can't find any of those in amber only clear ones. I went to AutoZone, Pepboys, Kragen, Walmart, ect. I went to Honda as well and they said they only have clear and that the 99-00 uses a different bulb style more like a light bulb rather than the wedge type which the 98 has. I know tons of people have done this swap before but I couldn't find any info regarding the bulbs and wiring. Would the 99 wiring harness for the outside lights hook up to my car? Or should I try and order some amber 7440 bulbs?

if you go to kragen... they sell amber bulbs that have the same connectors as the 96-98 style... the problem is that they dont have the plastic clips that hold them in place so they loosely fit... all you have to do is put them in and krazyglue them... let it sit overnight and pop em in the next morning and they work flawlessly... just a cheap way to get around it... works perfectly... had them on my car like that for a long long long time now and theyve never came loose or anything...

I'll think about that superglue thing. And I actually looked through all the bulbs and found no 7440s that were amber so I don't think they'll always have it, having went to 5 different auto stores. But I'll keep checking. I know PIAA has some 7440s that are clear and then light up amber but those are $35 I think. I'm looking more for the $5 range.

I would use silicone instead of super glue, that way, when it comes time to change out the bulb again, you don't need tools to hack the bulb out...and the silicone will come off everything nice and easy when you need it to.

Yeah, I tried looking for those too and they just had some green and blue ones. I think I might just get the wiring harness or maybe just buy the socket and rewire my existing harness if it's possible. Then use the 1157 bulbs like I'm supposed to. Anyone try this before? I'll check my manual and see if it has a schematic of the wiring.

There was a post on making the gauge cluster glow orange by painting those bulbs. I don't see why it wouldn't work for your taillights too.

ANY large wedge style amber bulb will work. You just need to do a bit more shoving. I had to do it on a friends car, but it worked.

Well I had a friend paint some bulbs for his tail lights and they didn't shine red enough some some cop wrote him a ticket. so I might not go that route. And I think it might be illigal to have red turn signals in california. Unless you have an old *** car that just flashes the brake lights. I'll look into that shoving thing too.

Can I get a post from someone if the wiring harness will swap right in from a 99 into a 98. On my 98 I have a 4 pin connector. Can someone check their outer tail light from a 99 coupe and see if it's a 4 pin as well?

I highly doubt it's illegal, seeing how most American cars come with red blinkers (Corvette, neon, focus, and most others cars, too)

only the rear and when it is used as a brake light also

the amber ones would have a different # because they are different bulbs somewhat (color changes the #) but probably close to that like 7441 (just an example)

Actually I think the number is the same. Because the ones that you need on the 99 are 1157NA and the NA means natural amber. And the clear are still 1157.

Went and bought the wiring harness. It is 4 pin and hooks up to the 98 connector fine. Put in the 1157NALL bulbs from sylvania and called it a day. Hope this is helpful to someone else changing their tails. Now I can use the right bulbs and be able to find them easily if I need replacement. No stupid taping some other "wedge" style ones or glueing them or any of that other stuff. Sure it is a little more costly but I'd say it is worth it.

Well I went to about 5 different auto parts stores and none had 7440 amber bulbs so this seemed like the best way for me to go.
