97civ HATCH no p/s.....hard?
hey guys, lookin for first car and i found a 97 civic hatchback wit only 32k miles, the car has no p/s and is a 5 speed. me and mom talked to the guy for a while then hung up and she said no. i said why and then she told me its too hard to drive 5 speed wit no p/s, then we called my aunt and she said the same thing.
is it really that hard? And how would u do turns and stuff, switch from 3rd to 2nd right before then 2 hand turn or what?

I have no P/S in my 97 hatch (never came with it) and it's fine. Little tough at first, but you get used to it.

ya you get used to it really fast, plus its more fun to drive without ps imo. drive it for a couple days and you'll forget that it doesn't have ps.

Yeah whenever I get back in my 4runner or my mothers Accord with PS it always feels overboosted and disconnected from the road. I won't have another car with PS unless it's a heavy car.

Even if I do have P/S in my DX, it feels a lot stiffer than my ex car (current G/Fs car) 1997 Accord EX. That P/S system is VERY loose. Don't like how it feels. I want to go to Manual steering, but want to get the actual Manual rack and not just loop it.

Good point. Just looping a power rack will make the steering tougher at low speeds than a manual rack.

mine was tuff at first until i lowered it and threw in hx rims, then it felt like i had a little bit of power steering, its softer though. but thats just my opinion. Its not that hard and you'll get some muscles out of it

I've got a 92 hatch... I've had 2 different people get in my car and start driving and say "Wow, nice power steering man". Which I of course don't have. One drove a 87 supra with the power steering broken(blown line). And the other drove an Eclipse. You only notice when your stopped.

Hey, your mom is smoking crack... That is the only logical explanation for what she has done or she did not want to pay for the car. Anyway, I am on my second Civic ('97 CX). This is not a fast car, this is not the *best* car, but it is a damn good car for the money. I will tell you that this vehicle is an ideal first car. I bought my last car from a girl, need I say more? If she could drive it, you probably could as well.

I just got my '93 CX hatch w/o PS and it took about a day to get used to. I had to learn to drive stick *and* figure out the no p/s thing, but I love it now. Wouldn't trade my car for anything.

Hey i was in your same situation a couple of months ago because i had never driven a car without P/S. The car i ended up buying was a 95 dx hatchback and the power steering thing is overrated. Now i prefer non-power steering over power. When i drive my moms minivan, it feels weird to me now. It took me like one day to get used to it. Just get the hatch man, you wont regret it.
good luck

hahaha I did the same thing. I bought it even though I couldn't drive stick. Stalled out at a light through 3 changes and still bought it. Anyways, I liked my cx w/ no p/s. Compared to my Si I felt more in control. My mom used to drive a ford escort w/ no p/s she would always complain that her back hurt from turning the wheel. It was hard for her so she always told me to buy a car w/ p/s.

Re: (bogus_ek)
you get a better feel/feedback with no power steering
also no power steering is actually safer, if you engine were to die for some reason then for one you would not be used to no ps and you could quite possibly loose control of the car. No ps is great because if you car does happen to loose power then you still have full steering ability to get to a safe location.
that is the way i look at it
