Default 97 HX swap, stock y5 to 99' y8

Welllllllllllllll, haven't been on HT in awhile so sorry if you missed me haha jk......

Alright well I'm working on my friends 97 HX right now with the y5 motor in it. We just bought a 99' y8 motor and I was wondering if it was just a direct swap into the engine bay. I know that the mounts are the same, and all that jazz but I'm more interested in the electrical side. Can I just swap over the O2 sensor(cause I think the y8 motor came with a 5 wire), the intake manifold from the y5 to the y8, dizzy, and I should be straight right?

I know the 99-00 civic is obd2a and his hx is obd2. Just wondering I guess to summeriaze is

Can I just use the head and block, and just swap dizzys and intake manifold to save that hassle of getting a new wiring harness and will it run properly?

Thanks all,
Chris

Y5 has a 5 wire oxygen sensor that is useless therefore you can't run any primary oxygen sensor. I did the same swap and mine won't run with a chipped p28

You can wire up the 4 wire directly to the ECU or tap/depin into the 4 wires of the HX primary that correspond with the 4 wires of the EX sensor

Yeah I saw that when I was pulling the y5 out my B. But can you answer the second question? If I reuse the y5 dizzy and intake mani(why not reuse the exhaust mani from the y5? just thought about that...) should I be fine? I mean, I dot see why not. It should be just plug and play. I'm also using the ex tranny that came with the y8 motor cause the hx's is shot and all that fun stuff.

Yeah the y5 intake and exhaust manifold will work fine. The 02 will have to be changed over if you plan on using the P2P ECU however.

You'll also have to add the wiring for the knock sensor

What do you mean add the knock sensor? I know the y8 block came with a green plug on the back of the block but I didn't see it on the y5 so I thought it wouldn't be a big deal.

So I got the engine in. Using the y8 engine, but the y5 intake mani and exhaust mani too. Yet when I tried to put the dizzy(the y5) on the y8 it wouldn't line up. So I tired the dizzy that it came with with engine. That one doesn't even fit correctly. Well I was playing with it and I tried to fire it up but I crank it and it seems like it just kills itself with back pressure from the engine. It fires after two turns but stops cause of the back pressure I'm guessing it's creating.

I'm using the stock y5 ecu also. All wiring is done and plugged in, just won't fire cause of te dizzy I'm guessing.

What part of that is tripping you up? And why are you not using the Y8 ECU?

I thought I could reuse the y5's ecu. Plus isn't the y8 ecu obd2a? The car is obd2. Im reusing everything. Wiring harness, intake mani, exhaust Mani, ecu, the whole shebang.

Yea you can use the same computer it should be almost all plug and play I kno the part numbers are different for the two dissys but you said the one that the engine came with doesn't fit does it not fit the plug or the head if it don't fit the head u don't have a y8 dizzy only thing u can do is switch out the internals but may cause future problems

Yeah when I bought the engine I failed to look at the small things like the dizzy. But it never did fit the head. The plug is good. But the bolt holes don't line up on the head.

to run the 99 y8 your car is obd2a but the engine and ecu is obd2b so to run the 99 engine in your car you will need a conversion harness. Honestly if there isn't anything really wrong with the y5 I would just leave it alone for no more gains than what you would get from it. Now if you got say a y8 tranny and swapped it onto the y5 engine that would be great to do and more worthwhile.

Easiest way is to use the Y8 wiring harness, makes it a drop in swap.

So what dizzy are y'all using(part number helps please). The y5's dizzy doesn't fit the y8's cylinder head so I'm just gonna get a dizzy coverter from rywire so there is no splicing.

But I need to find the correct dizzy. Autozone gave me a obd1 one but it too doesn't fit. Any help is appreciative.

you need a Y8 ECU and I wouldnt really want to use the Y5 manafolds. Also you need to use the original main O2 sensor. And what dizzy did it come with that it wont line up? As far as I know the Y7 Y5 and Y8 dizzy's are all the same... but I haven't seen many Y5's so its possibel they are different as the Y5 has a completely different kind of valvetrain (it has a awesome roller-rocker setup).

you need:

99-00 dizzy
99-00 ecu standard
96-98 obd2a to 99-00 obdb jumper harness

that should be it to be honest with you, someone correct me if im wrong?

I'm not worried about going fast or non of that. Dont care if it's in VTEC or not. My friend just wants his car running. Cheapest way. I'm gonna see if I can use the b7 dizzy with a obd2a jumper so I do t have to change the ecu or wiring.
