97 HX braking options?
 

I have been researching what brake upgrades if any can be done using my HX wheels which are 14in

the rotors are 9.2in and the ex has 10.2in but wasn't sure if that is the only upgrade i could make using the 14in wheel

I wanted to keep the stock wheels since they are extremely light, and id like to have the biggest rotor caliper combo I can get for now, since i am getting close to running out of pad and rotor thickness.

Even with the stock EX/Si front brakes the HX wheels don't clear because of the calipers. From what understand you either have to use spacers or shave the calipers in order to make that setup fit.

I wouldn't figure you'd have much luck getting any larger setups on there.

There are other light wheel options out there, but of course they're going to cost you more money.

I upgraded to 11.1 inch rotors and ITR calipers but I don't think my stock EX wheels would even clear those now. If you want to upgrade beyond your wheels, make sure you have some wheels available before you get the brakes on. Hate to overlook that!

You can run spacers for the hx wheels to clear, are you only interested in front brake upgrades?

You can also do a rear disk conversion

I would like to really upgrade to bigger wheels but right now sadly I can't afford them and wanted to.

I did want to upgrade the rear aswell, and would love to be able to drop weight if i could, but not sure about that.

What would be my options for the rear, as i was thinking i could do ex/si or wasn't sure if gsr rears might work?

I would say to get 99-00 si, if possible. However EG/DC will fit just fine.

You could also switch to a high performance pad, such as the Hawk HPS or HP. And run brembo blank rotors, or whatever rotor you chose. A guy on here sells all 4 for 99-00 si for 122 shipped.

I planned to get ss lines, hawk hp pads, and I found a company who makes 2 piece rotors in any size specified, and Made in USA

so that is my plan and i will make the most of what I have, I drive like an old man but things are a bit warn and haggard.

I may run a bigger MC and replace the fluid as well

Good cars take time to build.

Just really sucks when things start breaking or wearing out and you've just been wanting to upgrade, but the upgrade is much more expensive than fixing what you already have. Just feels like such a waste to pay for something you don't even want and plan to replace!

its always more expensive in my world, lol.

I cant just leave it stock and right now the car has 170k and its running just fine BUT the power steering pump has started making that wonderful noise, and I don't mind one bit with that bc i wanted to have manual steering like my 00 hatch i had previously.

Somehow the rotors i am getting are actually cheaper then oem, which are what i would have gotten. The pads are more expensive then most crappy autozone pads, and yes the lines are more but should last longer and give a better pedal feel. so for me its win win since i will also drop a few pounds and help with my hypermiling!

Which is another reason i don't want bigger wheels at present

chassis wise the hx and dx are the exact same as are the brakes. On my 97 hx I installed new brembo blanks and the best wearever pads that advance sells. For the rear I'm still using the drums but had them resurfaced along with new wheel cylinders along with bendix shoes which is also the best that advance sells for the rear.

I'm going to have to do something to my 2000 hx since it doesn't stop near as good compared to the 97 and also the rotors could either be turned/replaced.

What I would do is upgrade to rear disc from 99-00 si. The si and 96-00 ex have the same front brakes but the si gives you rear disc as well. You could also upgrade your fronts to that of an ex/si as well but you won't see much gains compared to doing the rear.

The 97 for me has been very easy on brakes. The car had new front brakes installed when I bought the car at 67k miles and I did the fronts myself at 160k when at the same time I had an axle boot blow out on me, then I did the rears at 180k and installed new kyb struts. Now I have 187k on it.

I do have to say with hypermiling i am extremely easy on brakes, hardly needing to use them but i always like to do preventative maintenance, especially since i know they are close to the limit as far as state inspection goes

Look for nolimitmotorports in the market place. They have a thread with pads for sale.
I was quoted 57.38 front and 47.38 rear for HPS pads for SI.

Sence you will be in there doing the brakes I ALWAYS reccomend changeing the fuild out. Really doesnt take to long, or much time. No point to have fresh brakes and crappy fuild.

good prices on those pads. i've seen them for up to around 80 for the fronts.
