first off, i don't think you have a 97 civic Si.. pretty sure they only made them for the 99-00 model years.
my suggestion is to not let your friend put a motor in your car again... or have him fix it for free.
none of these issues sound related neccessarily, you'll just have to approach them one at a time. if you can be a little more clear on what car you have, what engine exactly and more about how the car is set up (what ecu, what year is the 1.5L, manual trans...?) maybe someone will be able to help.

Re: 97 Honda Rpm Problems
anyway, so you have an EX with a D15B swap. if you're running the Y8 ECU on an OBD1 motor, i would expect you may have some trouble. look into an OBD1 ECU (P28 would be the common choice i believe). really, find out from your friend exactly what he did. did he modify the engine harness... is there a conversion harness already installed..?
the ECU is behind the passenger kick panel. pull the two clips loose and slide away from firewall to release. you'll see the ECU. if you don't see the number on side, you may need to look around the other side. two bolts should let it loose so you can turn it around.

Re: 97 Honda Rpm Problems
I presume the PO purchased an Si badge and glued it to the back of his EX? The P2P ECU is stock for the Civic EX D16Y8 engine. Jump the service connector to pull the CEL codes and also check whether fuse 15 is blown. As mentioned, the OBDII P2P will look for sensors that the D15B engine may not have.

yeah, or needed a junk yard trunk after an accident...and all they had was an Si. either way, the VIN shows that it's really an EX. i hope you paid for an EX...!

i jumped the service connector to pull the CEL codes and it blinked once so i t says thats the oxygen sensor im gonna try getting a new one u guys think that might be whats causing the problem with the rpm?

Re: 97 Honda Rpm Problems
If a faulty O2 sensor causes a lean condition, then the engine may run like crap. Try unplugging the primary O2 sensor to see if the problem goes away.

Re: 97 Honda Rpm Problems
was it one long blink? or a short blink? because if it was a long blink.. its intake air temp sensor.
it may be because the ecu is meant for a 1.6l.. and you're running a 1.5l make sure all the sensors are plugged in properly and check your iacv (idle air control valve).. maybe you have some plugs switched around. and if its a 95 and lower motor it might have an fitv (Fast Idle Thermo Valve).
i think pictures and/or a video will really help solve the situation.
