Default 97 hatch on a 99

I picked up a 99 hatch for a cool 250$ and it needs a rear hatch to make the body perfect. Its a 99 dx so its lacking the interior pop for the rear hatch, it just has the handle in the hatch itself and the key that locks/unlocks it. I found a 97 hatch, unfortunately not the same color in a junkyard and I can pick it up for cheap because its missing the rear glass. The problem is that the 97 didn't have the rear handle in the hatch and had an interior pop for the hatch. Can I adapt the opening mechanism from my 99 to the 97 rear hatch, is it just a matter of swapping over the latch/lock and rear license plate surround or are the actual hatch interior steel setup different? Thanks in advance.

bump... anyone have any idea if the hatches are the same? I'm just trying to decide to get this one in the junkyard or not.

I think you're going to have to go with getting a 99-00 hatch. You'll enjoy the latch on the exterior. I would spend the money if it's more expensive just to aviod time/labor/money for conversion parts.

Finally got pictures of it, I replaced the rear bumper cover because it was barely hanging on by a few of the clips and it was completely destroyed, all cracked and this one I found in a pick n pull for 40$. I'll eventually get it painted to match. The tail light was the culprit of the leaking water, the lens was smashed from an accident at some time and the impact sliced the tail light gasket in half letting water in. I still think it was the best $250 I ever spent, let me know what you think. ?

clean title from South Dakota, everything else works, a/c blows cold, it desparetly needs an input shaft bearing the trasmission sounds like a helicopter w/ the clutch let out, but that is my next fix, I'm going to completely tear down the trans and replace the bearings, axle seals, pressure plate, clutch, resurface the flywheel, and replace anything else that looks worn out, ie shift forks, syncro's etc. The car shifts smooth but I'm worried that the bearing might have allowed other things to go out of spec. But I'll find out, I work at a Honda dealer so I've torn down quite a few trans. I'll take more pics of it when I'm doing it, let everyone know how it goes.

To hell with Orange County, im rolling out to South Dakota. 250 for a hatch is a steal and a half. Now if you would be so kind as to help some of us out here in Cali finding cars like that.

Well, I quickly found out what was making the god awful noise in the transmission. After taking the transmission casing off, the mainshaft outer bearing was destroyed and I'm going to replace both mainshaft bearings while im in there because from what I've read its usually the other one that goes first. I'm replacing the axle seals and the mainshaft seal as well. Heres a picture of the noisy bearing:

that looks good compared to the one I pulled from this z6 tranny I have. The plastic bearing case was OBLITERATED. Only tiny particles left foating around the tranny. Everything else was mint, tho.

no if you can get the transmission out then getting the bearing out is no big deal at all, if yours comes apart the way it should, the transmission case bearing should be on the mainshaft when you take it apart. Just tap it off the mainshaft. If yours is like mine was, stuck in the transmission case, I just used a hook tool and got behind the bearing, used a vise grip to grab the hook tool and then lightly tapped the trans case with a rubber mallet to remove the bearing. The inner bearing that is in the clutch housing is easy too, just remove the countershaft and mainshaft together with the shift forks and then use a socket and a long extension and come through the other side and hit it out with a mallet. I used the helms manual for the disassembly.

yes there is no inner hatch release, there is a handle between the license plate lights and a key lock that only locks and unlocks the tailgate, when you unlock it, it doesn't pop open like my ef one does. I had a 92 hatch and from what I remember it was still a pop inside but it only opened the glass part and then it had a small handle that you slide to the left to open the lower tailgate (still my favorite design)

my hatch is a 99, not a 97. The difference is the 96-98 had the inner release with no handle, the 99-00 hatches have no release and do have a handle.

Actually, that's not entirely true. I've seen 99+ hatches with an inner release, and two of my friend's have 97+ hatches (96 for the lose) that have no inner release. It's about where it was manufactured.

What are you talking about? He's saying he needs to buy a hatch that HAS the handle, because he has no inside pop, and his current hatch doesn't have it. Of course he'd grab the handle to open it. Where the expletive else would he grab. I think you are the only one confused in this thread.

I was unaware of the difference being due to the manufacturing location, I just assumed it was because of the subtle differences in the 96-98 and 99-00 like the tail lights, front bumper interior hvac controls etc.
