Default 97 EX Sedan automatic mpg?

So recently bought the wife the above, its 100% unmolested stock and runs pretty decent. Can't seem to get better than 24-27 mpg. Is this the legit average?

All outer seals, timing belt job and tune up was done with all Honda seals and parts (ngk plug wires tho). Tires balanced, new gas cap (honda) and even had a shop check it out.

Thanks!

gas mileage is very dependant on driving habits, but your slushbox is also holding you back. 27 is pretty reasonable.

Yea that is what I was thinking too, 2-3 rides a little too long before shifting, so I'm guessing that could be +/- 1mpg or so. Solenoid tested ok, so im going to spray the solenoid out or replace it w a used one and do 2 more honda ATF fluid changes...MB I can stretch this trans another 20-30thousand sigh.

Even then, just as things start to wear out in the transmission, your gas mileage will gradually get worse. Try to never let your RPM exceed 3000, though, and watch your gas mileage increase just from that one little change. I'm not kidding when I say driving habits make a huge difference.

^Normal, though you should be able to get low 30s with all freeway driving.

Do at least 3 ATF drain-refill cycles. Move the transmission through all the gears several times between each drain-refill cycle. Use Castrol Import ATF.

Roger that, ill start the process for thevadditional changes next week! I've always owned my eg, so this ek stuff is new to me.

Random, does the gas gauge needle move around alot in anyone else's? My eg gauge is a rock and only moves on long sweeping curves etc. Fuel sending unit I'm guessing?

Thanks guys, been years since I posted on HT lol...

Why Castrol over Honda ATF?

The new Honda stuff is a different formula then what is on shelves for imports now.

Less as expensive, but seems to work well for the 6th gen Civic auto trans.

Your mpg range seems correct. My '97 EX coupe gets about 22-24 city and 30-35 highway depending on speeds. Here's a good read for increasing mpg's: How To Increase Your Gas Mileage

As far as the gas gauge.. yes, it's sloppier than a 60 year old French *****'s vagina.
Not sure if it's related to poor tank baffling or the gauge itself? If you want better gas mileage make a lot of right turns (or left..can't remember) and watch the needle rise..lol

Checking back in, after a month of trying different things, no ac and 3k or under rpms has resulted in tanks of 29, 30, 33 and .......34.9! Mpg. Ac usage decreased on each tank, hence the increase.

About to start the trans flush fill cycle in December, I have a trip coming up and we are gone for 21 days.

Thanks everyone!

There are alot of things to consider when trying to get acurate mpg from an auto

city?
hwy?
incline/declines?
heavy foot/light foot?
regular tune-ups?
alot of stop and go?
