Default 97 dx hatch d16y7 what to do with it?

1997 dx hatch has d16y7 only 120xxx, even has all the paperwork on every oil change and all that good stuff. I was planning on buying a motor and doing a complete swap, but with that low mileage I am highly reconsidering what I should do. I was thinking just doing a basic head swap or maybe going turbo with replaced internals. Any suggestion I am on a middle budget about 2-3 grand and the car is worth putting time into top to bottom inspection with no rust.

no point on wasting ur money on a swap when ur engine is at 120k IMO people who wipe there asses with $100 bills would do it, id say make sure everything is running perfectly, what kind of suspension does it have? Springs, coilovers? stock shocks? Maintaince is a first

you'r not turboing it for 2-3 grand.... head swap sure why not costs maybe 200 get a bit more power+vtec.

You can easily boost for $3000. I've said it before, my complete turbo build cost <$1500, and was all legit, high quality parts except the piping.

OP, boost is your best option for power, just make sure you do it right. You don't need to replace the internals. You can safely and easily double your WHP with a properly sized turbo for well within your budget. Look into a TD04HD-19T, or a Disco Potato.

b16 is a waste, what can a stock y7 hold in terms of power?

That's what I'm saying - the B16 is a pointless swap when there are plenty of B18's readily available.

Stock, I've heard 200-250. I ran mine tuned to 200 on the nose with zero problems for about a year before the center cartridge blew on the turbo. Compression tests before and after that year were within 1PSI of each other, and perfectly healthy. Dollar for dollar, boost > swap. For the same price as an SI or LS swap, you could boost the Y7 for more power. For the same price of a B18C5 (closest comparable motor) you could swap in an SI or LS and boost it for even more power.

I have never thought of it like that, but for most people to boost and tune properly s going to be around 3000$

A LS swap is what around 1000$ to do properly?

I still prefer a DOHC swap first then boost but I also am an adult and money is not an issue, time is.

Doubleing your whp reliably...then what? You get bored at 200whp and have to spend the money to tear it down and address the weak links in the internals.
I guess I dont quite understand all the hate on b16's lately...I think a b16 has much more potential than a y7 any day...not like they are all that expensive anymore.
A y7 or any single cam for that matter would never be my first choice of a engine to modify...but can also appreciate a nicely done/quick one too. To call a b16 worthless and favor a y7 and hold it up on a platter blows my mind.

I do not hold the b16 over the y7 at all and would take my b16 over any sohc stock for stock. But if you have the option of what to swap in why not go for a b18 variant over the b16, it clearly makes more sense to have a larger motor for the same or less price.

more TQ with the b18 that's the main reason i see as far as advantage. the b16 has 4 lbs of tq over the stock y8 107 vs 111(b16a2). It feels like a d down low vs the 128-135(jdm itr) of the b18's

I think I'd go for B18 Non-vtec before a B16...

Laugh all you want, but for a DD, its a better choice...

B16 has to scream to make power, probably why there are so many EM1 shells in the scrap yard.. "Hold on, I can make it veeeetak before we hit that red light/stop sign/tailgate of dump truck/etc....

And not to mention, cheap as **** to swap... And not hard to find one.... Well, not hard to find one thats NOT been beat on for 100k...

Its also a great motor to boost if you feel you need a Civic with wings...

This what I plan to do to my 97 Civic with a Y7.... But like the OP, I have low mileage... She's only got 75,000km on the ODO...

Not even worth it to fiddle around yet... She needs some slop first...

Im curious to hear some factual justification on why a b16 is a waste/pointless/worthless motor...yet to have heard any.
Seems to just be some personal preference in favoring a whoping .2 liters of displacement....Or building what you got. <---- which is the only thing I can agree with thus far considering not everyone has the same salary.

It's not really worthless, it's just too damn over priced. The B16 is an excellent engine - still a marvel of automotive engineering to this day - it's just been overshadowed by Honda's larger displacement (therefore better) B engines.

Back when I bought my B16A ('02) the B18C was ~$1000 more. Many people, including myself, couldn't justify the expense for 0.2 liters. Now the price gap has narrowed and the B18C is no doubt worth the extra coin.

there are a ton of em1 shells at the junkyard because they are high theft.

100% agree....it is worth it, still doesnt make it a worthless motor as some in this thread seem to believe.

More like the entire site for the most part. People HATE the B16 around here. I also believe a lot of those people have never even driven one lol

B16s in stock form=gutless wonders. B16s as a platform for boost=muy excellente. If you ever hear me say the B16 is overrated that is exactly what I'm saying. Worthless? Hardly. But if you're going to swap and leave it at that then there are way better options out there.
