'97 Del Sol - Cold air intake and catback exhaust
I'm a Honda noob but decades long Datsun 510 driver. I scored my '97 S from an 76 year old guy who had it for 15 years and kept it garaged the whole time he had it. He put a lot of miles on it (200,000+) but took excellent care of it. He threw in a complete rear disc brake package that I'll get around to installing soon. I'm an older guy myself and since my FJ20 510 is already too fast I'm not looking to go crazy with the mods. Cold air intake and a catback exhaust will probably be the extent of it. I'd like to retrofit cruise control and AC at some point. I'd like to lower it a little but don't really want to slam it or get a stiff ride in the process. I've found a lot of good stuff here but I will no doubt have a few dumb questions.

re: '97 Del Sol - Cold air intake and catback exhaust
The first benefit of replacing this stock air intake system is increased acceleration due to added horsepower and torque. Secondly, with more air in the combustion mixture, the engine uses less fuel to power itself. Aftermarket air intakes have more effective filters than the ones that come with OEM
air intakes. A less restrictive exhaust increases power (do I really have to explain this??). On top of an improvement in performance as marginal as it may seem, the fuel economy gets better. If I wanted a tire smoking hot rod I'd just crank up my 510.

he was being sarcastic. about all those bolt ons will do for the d16y7 engine in your car is put a dent in your wallet. if you're gunning for two easy-ish parts to swap out to help that little motor, find and install a d16y8 intake manifold, and ditch the terrible cat-on-manifold header setup.

air intakes.
Keeping a "restrictive" OEM air filter or even a dirty air filter won't effect anything power/fuel economy wise. http://www.google.com/search?q=dirty+air+filter+fuel+economy&safe=off&hl=en&gbv=2&oq=dirty+air+filter+fuel+&gs_l=heirloom-serp.1.0.0j0i22i30l5.24935.33614.0.35316.33.25.1.4.4.1.253.3331.0j9j7.16.0....0...1ac.1.34.heirloom-serp..16.17.2505.ndUSq9ypzPo

In other words, save your $$.

Instead of the CAI and exhaust. I'd be trying to find things like say the JDM map lights, JDM sunvisors, rear panel fillers, things of that nature. But somebody did mention doing the y8 Im swap which is definitely worth it.
Those pieces really give the sol style.

Edit: Or scrape off some weight Honda made the 96-97s so damn heavy.

The JDM body and interior stuff would be cool but for the time being I'm more concerned with the functional stuff. As for the Y8, aside from 22hp what is different about it from the Y7? What parts do they share, if any? Can a Y7 be rebuilt to Y8 specs?

the bottom ends are nearly identical. alternator, distributor are the exact same. you really just need the head, intake manifold, and some type of less restrictive exhaust manifold. since you've got the s model, you'd probably notice the most difference from a transmission swap, either 92-95 civic ex (d16z6), or any 96-00 d16y8 transmission. the transmissions sell for around $150, and the "butt dyno" will notice them more than the y8 head swap.
