Default 97 Civic - speedo is jumpy

I have a 97 Hatch cx 5spd. The speedo is jumping around. Where is the sensor and what is the common problem? loose wires on the sensor or on the cluster? bad cluster? here is the car in question - also for sale.

wasn't posting it for sale, just asking about the speedo sensor.

So you think it needs to be replaced or just the wiring is loose? any other possibilities?

what does vss stand for? I am guessing it will probably be the only electrical connection on the tranny besides maybe the reverse switch?

whats the difference if the pic is there or not? You guys probably wouldn't have even opened the thread if you didn't see the special little camera image next to the title.

it doesnt matter what your car looks like to tell you what to look for to fix it... this is a tech thread not a pic thread... if you read the rules (which i know you didnt) then you would have taken the pic to the for sale forum, not here... and no, i didnt click on the title because i saw your little pic icon next to it... i figured i would try to be nice and tell you what to look for FIRST instead of just telling you to search and take the pic off blah blah... just tryin to give you a few pointers to HELP you out... guess people dont like that anymore these days

I actually like looking at pictures. Its nice to know what car is in question, it can give people a better idea of what is in question.

I did some searching and found that it should either be the VSS that is bad or the sensor has corrosion, water, etc.

anyone know a good place to get the vss new or used? cheaper the better. oh also what other years can it be taken off of?

this forum isnt about what you like personally... if it was something that you couldnt explain very well then its understandable

junkyard... any speed sensor should work fine off any d series motor... you could prob use a b series one too but im not sure if the gear is the same... so be safe and stick with a d series one

more than likely the vss terminals are corroded because of is placement under the thermo housing and coolent lined

I guess my next question is if auto and manual vss' are the same? I have a couple 96-00 civic auto trannies here at the shop that I could rob one off of.

cleaned up? come on, this is a simple technical thread that has been blown out of proportion by you.

So does anyone know if an auto tranny VSS will work on the manual for the same gen civic?

yes an auto one will work... and yes if people like you didnt ask the same questions over and over, it wouldnt clutter this forum with the same info... i guarantee that you could have already answered all the questions you have on the subject at hand and prob had the car fixed by now if you had searched... whenever i have a problem i ALWAYS search it first... if i cant find any info on my specific problem, then i might start a thread... in your case, the vss has been covered sooooo many times, theres no way you could not have found any info on it... but people like you are eager to jump the gun and start a thread and too lazy to find the info on your own

sooooo what. if someone asks something that you know has been covered a million times then don't give your answer. don't play hero, let the guy drown. eventually he'll start searching more on his own.

nice boobies, Purple_Civic

you don't know me or anything about me so don't tell me I am eager. I have been posting on car forums 8 years, I know how to search and I do plenty of it. I searched the VSS and there wasn't anything specific to what I needed answers to. Each thread was covered with a different car (although no picture so it was hard to tell what car was in question) and a different problem. There is nothing wrong with posting a technical question. Someone will search this thread sometime in the future and have to filter out all your crap to find the real technical info.

neutron91: you need to step off this guy man, he asked a question and you say its been covered a million times yet you continue to give him answers as well, if you are so worried about it than why even post? instead youre just trying to be the internet tough guy. and i dont know why your so mad about the pic, this isnt a for sale thread he came with a legitimate question and just happened to post a picture as well, there is tech in this post, as much as you hate to hear it. to you
