i just bought a 97 civic when i brought it home it ran great . after a week of sitting (was out of town) i came back and i drove it , it ran hot and started smoking , took it off the road checked fluids topped it all off and it ran again smoked the whole way home but ran . now it starts but as soon as i come to a stop sign or have to slow for anyreason it will sputter then die, unless i put it into neutral and continuously press the gas then it will stay running.

Does the car start smoking the second you turn it on? If so what color was the smoke?
When you go to start the car does it crank right away and start or does it click?

it starts right away sometimes an dsometimes it clicks a few times but almost always starts. and it does smoke its a dark gray to almost black , but stops just a few seconds later.

no codes pop up. i think i found the problem. can a cracked exhaust manifold cause this?
